Summer Term Newsletter #38
17th July 2026
Dear Parents and Carers,
The last full week of term has been full-on; we definitely are not relaxing into the holidays! On Monday, we had our final phonics development day where we reviewed our outcomes and made plans for continued progress next year. Year 6 completed their enterprise projects hosting stalls for the rest of the school. On Wednesday, Year 5 visited the RAF museum to enrich their learning and Year 6 entertained us all as they performed their production to an audience of proud parents. Yesterday, we had our second transition morning, the gardening club visited Serge Hill and Mr Bristow hosted an online parent workshop about secondary transition. Finally today, Rock Steady groups performed to the school in assembly and the Friends of Lanchester ended the week with a final family World Cup celebration.
Thank You: LanchestFest was another spectacular success last weekend where the community came together to enjoy music, food and entertainment stalls. It was wonderful to see everyone enjoying themselves and coming together at school. All the hard work and preparation that it takes to put together such an event is a formidable task. I want to give a huge thank you to the Friends of Lanchester for all they do to bring us all together (and raise valuable funds to help enrich our curriculum).
Incredible Outcomes: We build our provision around the whole child and are keen to ensure we provide a broad curriculum. However, we are judged on our assessment data at key points in the learning journey: development in Reception, phonics in Year 1, times tables in Year 4 and SATS in Year 6. The data is provisional but I have shared it below and I am incredibly proud of my teaching team and your children. We can achieve a great deal when we work together.
Values: Our value has been appreciation: "Around us, life bursts with miracles—a glass of water, a ray of sunshine, a leaf, a caterpillar, a flower." Thich Nhat Hanh. Next week, we turn to reflection and look back on the incredibly journey we have all been on this year.
Goodbyes: Sadly, we must say some fond farewells to members of our community. Today, Miss Kok finishes her time with us. She joined in January and brought a calm, kind and collected presence to our team. She fully immersed herself in school life and I am thankful for her dedication to the children. Mr Kinsella leaves us next Wednesday as he takes on new adventures elsewhere. He has been a wonderful teacher nurturing each individual and giving so much of himself to his role. Mrs Gomes will also leave next week. She has brought a wealth of knowledge and experience to the current Reception and Year 1 classes as well as supporting our Butterfly provision. She is very popular with the children and will be missed. Lastly, Mr Hunt finishes this summer. He has worked so hard to improve our site and to support the community in so many ways. We wish them all the very best and hope they keep in touch!
This is the last newsletter of the year and brings us to the end of our second year together as a team - what a journey it is! We have made a great start but there is plenty more to do, so rest up and recharge ready to resume in September. I hope you all enjoy a relaxing summer break with your friends and family.
Best wishes,
Mr. Matt Morey - Headteacher
Another year of strong data following from last summer. As you can see, we exceed the national average in almost all outcomes. Some significant strengths are the incredible GLD and phonics outcomes, alongside the MTC check in Year 4. These are outcomes to celebrate and be proud of. Well done to everyone involved: staff for their dedication and high expectations; children for their resilience and determination; parents for your support and encouragement.

Children’s attitude to learning has been recognised through the collection of dojo points, which are then totalled as house points across the school. Every child continues to show their commitment to being Ready, Respectful and Resilient, earning points for their house. Each half term the points are reset and a new competition begins. Well done to Alhazen who hold a sizeable lead going into the lsat few days. Surely the title is theirs?!
Here’s how the points stand:
1st: Alhazen with 3654 points (+398)

Class News
Reception have ended the week with a much-anticipated trip to Bekonscot Model Village and Railway, supporting our Understanding the World topic, Big Wide World. This half term, the children have enjoyed exploring maps of our local area, the UK, and countries around the world. At Bekonscot, they experienced a “giant’s-eye view” of towns and cities from above and loved exploring the detailed miniature village and its many fascinating features.
This week in Maths, Year 1 have been learning all about money. The children have been recognising different coins by their colour, size and shape, learning the value of each coin, and using this knowledge to make different amounts. They have also enjoyed taking part in practical shopping activities, choosing the correct coins to pay for items and beginning to work out whether they had the right amount of money. It has been wonderful to see their confidence grow through hands-on learning!
This week in Year 2/3 DT, we have been learning all about greenhouses and their uses. The children have explored the structure of a greenhouse and discovered how it creates the right conditions for plants to grow. The children have been incredibly excited about this DT project as they created their very own mini greenhouses using empty water bottles. They carefully planted cress seeds. They have been making sure their mini greenhouses are looked after by giving their plants water and allowing fresh air in when needed. It has been wonderful to see their curiosity and excitement as they check on their cress every day, making predictions and eagerly wondering what changes they will see overnight.
We had a wonderful week in Year 4! Our classroom was transformed into a stage for our Independent Projects, where the children chose topics they love and presented them to the class. It was a truly beautiful experience, especially as we watched some of our quieter, less confident children step into the spotlight and present with immense confidence and pride. In Maths, we have been diving into Statistics by learning how to collect, organize, and graph data to understand the world around us. Finally, our young entrepreneurs put their passion for the environment into action by selling ice lollies to raise vital funds to save the rainforest, proving that they can make a real-world difference. We are so very proud of all their hard work!
As we head into the final stretch of the academic year, it has been a busy and reflective week in Year 5. In the classroom, the children have been applying their impressive writing skills to the test with their independent writing task. Meanwhile, as part of our Science topic, they have been comparing the intricate life cycles of different animals. To top it all off, we ended the week with a fantastic trip to the RAF Museum. Getting to see those incredible historic aircrafts up close was a thrilling and memorable way to begin our end-of-year celebrations.
We want to take this moment to say a huge, heartfelt well done to all the children in Year 5. We are incredibly proud of your hard work, curiosity and the resilience you've shown this year. Finally, to all our parents and carers: a massive thank you. Your unwavering support, encouragement and partnership have meant the world to us. We truly couldn't do it without you!
Year 6 delivered an incredible performance at West Herts College this week. Both classes shone on the big stage, showing immense talent, confidence, and dedication throughout the show. We are exceptionally proud of all their hard work in bringing this production to life, and we thank everyone who came to support them.
LanchestFest
Thank you to everyone who attended or supported the day. We cannot do it without you all. Thanks to the staff who manned the stalls, set up and tidied away with us. We raised important funds to help the school continue to expand its music provision.
Wishing you all a wonderful summer when we get there!
