Spring Term Newsletter #28
25th April 2025
Dear Parents and Carers,
Welcome back to school! I hope you all enjoyed a relaxing break. It was great to see so many excited and energised faces striding into school on Tuesday morning; with the sun shining and the blossom canopy over the walkway, there was a real feel-good factor about coming back to school. I am pleased to say this continued into the classrooms and it has been pleasing to see everyone focused and working hard this week.
Values: This half term, 'respect' will be our key value for the next five weeks as we look to embed this into our school culture. This week we reviewed how we show respect within the school building by moving quietly and sensibly and greeting those we meet. Next week, we will explore what 'respect' looks like in the dining room.
Votes for Schools: This week we considered 'Does good news inspire you to help the environment?' Children explored a range of good and bad news stories about the environment and there were mixed views. Many felt that bad news was more motivational as we needed to fix the problems. Next week, we will be discussing 'Should UK leaders make sure all children's needs are met?'
Maths: We use White Rose Maths as our whole-school scheme for maths teaching. They have a '1-minute maths' app which is a great way to consolidate the key facts and functions. The app can be downloaded for free and more information is available here.
Music: This week we welcomed Matthew Kenny into school. He's a peripatetic brass and piano music teacher. We also have capacity for violin lessons too. If you are interested, please scan the link at the bottom of this newsletter to register your interest with Herts Music Service.
New Staff Members: This week, we have welcomed Melissa Gomes, Laura Ferguson and Gillian Allett into the team. Mrs Gomes is working with Mrs Henney in the Reception class. Mrs Ferguson (mornings) and Mrs Allett (afternoons) are the new office team members. All three bring a wealth of experience and knowledge to the school.
Nut-Free School: Lanchester Primary School is a nut-free school. Several pupils in school are vulnerable to severe anyphalaxis if exposed to nut products. We kindly ask all members of our community not to bring nuts in as a snack or part of their lunch. Thank you for helping us to keep the school safe for all pupils.
The Enrich Festival is taking place in town this weekend and tickets are still available. Whatever you choose to do, I hope you all enjoy a relaxing weekend.
Best wishes,
Mr. Matt Morey - Headteacher

Each term the house points are reset and we begin a new competition. To enhance the work we are doing on respect, dojos for respect are now worth two points. Children’s attitude to learning has been recognised through the collection of dojo points, which are then totalled as house points across the school. Every child continues to show their commitment to being Ready, Respectful and Resilient, earning points for their house.
Here’s how the points stand:
1st: Carver with 313 points
2nd: Alhazen with 312 points
3rd: Curie with 307 points
4th: Sharman with 302 points
Let’s keep up the great work and continue to support each other as we aim for the top!
Class News
The children in reception have had a busy first week back. In literacy, we have been hooked into our new story ‘Farmer Duck’, where we discussed different jobs on a farm. The children then got to have a go at the jobs themselves including milking cows, harvesting vegetables, feeding the animals and shearing the sheep. In maths, we have been looking at 3D shapes and comparing them to everyday objects.
This week, Year 1 embraced the excitement of Arithmetic Week with a lively Numeracy Scavenger Hunt! Working in small teams, the children tackled 10 thoughtfully crafted maths challenges hidden around the classroom. This engaging activity not only reinforced their understanding of key concepts like addition, subtraction, and number patterns but also fostered collaboration and problem-solving skills. It was a joy to see their enthusiasm as they applied their mathematical knowledge in a fun, interactive setting.
In Year 2, students embarked on an exciting learning adventure with a royal theme! They dove into the world of kings, queens, and castles, exploring different settings as part of our English and History learning. The classroom was transformed into a majestic setting, with a throne, crown, and shimmering jewels adorning the space.
The royal theme brought a sense of adventure and wonder, sparking children's imagination as we began to focus our senses on the atmosphere of our surroundings.
Year 3 settled back well after the Easter break. They focussed on improving their times tables this week in preparation for the multiplication checks in the new academic year. The children demonstrated great levels of resilience and determination too!
The children have settled in wonderfully after the break, and it’s been a busy and exciting start to the term. We started with our first swimming lesson, and the children had a fantastic time in the pool, showing great enthusiasm and teamwork. In History, we explored Sumerian artefacts. The children carefully examined these objects and used their features to make guesses about what they might be and what they can tell us about life in the past. It was a great way to bring history to life and spark their curiosity about ancient cultures!
This week Year 5 have been exploring different environments in their English work. They have been all over the world exploring Arctic, Rainforest, Oceanic, and Human habitats. Throughout their exploration they have explored ideas around what it is that threatens the existence of these places as we know them. They have expressed this through a creative session completing a task designed to apply their knowledge.
Our Year 6 artists have been diving into the wonderful world of Impressionism, taking inspiration from the master himself, Claude Monet! They've shown fantastic aspiration as they carefully observed his techniques and experimented with colour and light to create their own beautiful, textured paintings. It's been a joy to see them develop their artistic skills and express their creativity.
This week I have met with each year group team separately to review the outcomes and progress of pupils over the spring term. These meetings are an important part of our assessment cycle and help us to refine our provision to fill gaps in children's learning.
We hope you all had a lovely Easter break!
