Spring Term Newsletter #39
18th July 2025
Dear Parents and Carers,
As we approach the end of the academic year, we reach a point of reflection and a chance to look back on the last eleven months - September feels like a lifetime ago! It has been a time packed with learning, enjoyment and growth. I am really proud of the school we are becoming. There have been many special moments but a few to highlight: the bountiful collection for Harvest, the sense of community singing carols in local care homes, the diverse range of trips we have undertaken, the variety at the Class Expos, our first fixture in five years, the vibrant Colour Run, our glorious Sports Day and the phenomenon that was LanchestFest!
Thank Yous: Thank you to all of the staff team at Lanchester. Your hard work and care for each child is so important and highly valued. Thank you for a year of creativity, collaboration, commitment and resilience. Thank you to all parents and carers for your continued support and partnership. It makes such a difference when we work together for the benefit of the children. Thank you to the Friends of Lanchester. Your passion for the school and your bravery to plan and implement a schedule of events culminating in our own festival is incredible.
Values: Courage has been our weekly value and has been important for our Year 6 pupils as they have rehearsed and delivered their production this week. Next week our value is reflection as we think back on all that we have achieved this academic year.
Academic Outcomes: Education is very much about the whole child at Lanchester and one key component of that is academic success. This term, we have seen some excellent progress across the school. Year 1 scored 86.4% on the Phonics Screening Check placing us above the national (79.9%) and county (81.7%) averages. Year 4 scored an average 22.0 out of 25 with 45.8% scoring full marks. Year 6 Key Stage 2 SATS outcomes all sit above the national averages: Reading 76.3%, Maths 81.4% and Grammar (78%). Well done to all pupils and staff involved in these excellent results.
LanchestFest: Wow! Great music, wonderful people, action-packed stalls, tasty food and drink - what more could you ask for?! It was an incredible day where so many people commented on the sense of community. A huge thank you to everyone who contributed to the day.
Goodbye & Good Luck: Next week, we say goodbye to Mr Lees-Powell. He joined us in January doing an excellent job of stepping into all that Year 6 entails through the spring and summer terms. Mr Lees-Powell has been a model of our school values and I wish him all the very best as he moves to another primary school in Watford.
With all that has happened in recent weeks, I am hoping for a quiet weekend in my garden (children permitting!). Whatever you choose to do, have a great weekend. Three days to go!
Best wishes,
Mr. Matt Morey - Headteacher

Children’s attitude to learning has been recognised through the collection of dojo points, which are then totalled as house points across the school. Every child continues to show their commitment to being Ready, Respectful and Resilient, earning points for their house. Each half term the points are reset and a new competition begins. This week Sharman have timed their dash to perfection and claimed the top spot for the last week of the term! Congratulations to everyone involved. Every point represents a moment of success this term.
Here’s how the points stand:
1st: Sharman with 2919 points (+487 from last week)
2nd: Curie with 2874 points (+351 from last week)
3rd: Carver with 2818 points (+460 from last week)
4th: Alhazen with 2672 points (+398 from last week)
Let’s keep up the great work and continue to support each other as we aim for the top!
Class News
This week in Reception we have focused on happiness. We have read the story The Jar of happiness and discussed what things make us happy. The children then had a go at creating their own jar of happiness. In child initiated learning the children were tasked with thinking about the happiness of others. They drew pictures of what made their friends happy and wrote kind messages to make them smile.
This week, Year 1 have been diving into the fascinating world of trees as part of their science learning. The children have been learning to identify the differences between evergreen and deciduous trees, exploring how they change (or stay the same!) throughout the seasons. To bring their learning to life, the class went on a tree hunt around the school grounds, spotting and identifying different types of trees using their new knowledge. They also enjoyed creating tree rubbings, carefully capturing the unique textures of bark and leaves.
What an amazing way to end the year! Our Year 2 children had a thrilling final trip to the Tower of London, and it was a day to remember. From spotting the famous ravens to standing where kings and queens once walked, every moment was packed with excitement. The Crown Jewels sparkled brighter than ever, and meeting a real-life Beefeater was a definite highlight! It was the perfect grand finale to a fantastic year of learning and adventure.
Year 3 have really enjoyed reading Eva Ibbotson's 'The Abominables' this half term and are sad to be reaching the end of the story. Throughout the book, we explored how the characters showed great courage in many different ways. The children reflected on brave moments, reflected on what courage means and thought about how it can look different for different people.
This week, Year 4 children enjoyed more sessions with their new teacher and are feeling confident and settled as they prepare for the year ahead. They’ve worked consistently hard in swimming, with today marking their final lesson of the year. Well done for all your hard work and the fantastic progress you’ve made this year.
Best of luck for next year—we’re so proud of you all! Wishing everyone a fun-filled and joyful summer break!
This week in Year 5, the children have enjoyed using their kindly donated cardboard to create their fabulous ancient greek building in D&T. The children were shown some different ways in which they could use their equipment and cardboard to make columns to support their building designs. They worked hard over a whole day to produce their buildings and we are delighted with the results.
Year 6 have been busy rehearsing for their production, Pirates of the Currybean. The children have shown great enthusiasm and teamwork as they practise their lines, songs, and stage movements. Laughter and excitement have filled the room as they bring the hilarious pirate adventure to life. With each rehearsal, their confidence is growing, and they can’t wait to perform for their families and celebrate their final days at primary school with a show to remember.
This week we reviewed the impact of the changes we introduced this year: The 3Rs, Votes for Schools, Class Dojo and Pupil Leadership. We considered how to make them even better for the coming year. Work is also underway reviewing the diary and finalising dates for the autumn term.
LanchestFest
A massive thank you to everyone who supported on LanchestFest, we couldn't have done it without you. There are too many people to thank individually and we'll do a much bigger round up next week in our end of term newsletter but thank you very much to everyone who volunteered, donated or help spread the word.
We had an amazing day, had some brilliant feedback from attendees and beautiful photos of all the fun from the wonderful Millie Ned Photography. Cecil's Horse Sanctuary loved it and are already booked to come back next year.
A massive thank you to Lemongrass who supported us with delicious free Chinese food, it went down a storm!
A huge thank you to all of the children who helped us, the teachers but a special thank you to Mr Hunt who spent a lot of time helping us work out logistics, power, tables, ponies and so much more! We couldn't have done it without him.
Tea towels and glasses
We've been selling tea towels and glasses in the playground this week. Each class has a tea towel with lovely drawings by the children. Tea towels are £7 each and we still have some of each class available. Get in touch with us and we'll try to sell some next week at the end of term.
