Spring Term Newsletter #22
6th March 2026
Dear Parents and Carers,
It has been a very busy and purposeful week at Lanchester. It was great to see a classroom packed with parents on Monday evening to hear about the way our Year 2/3 provision is designed and delivered. I jumped from there straight to our termly governors meeting where we reviewed the school's progress. Members of the governing body will be present at parents' evening keen to hear your views about life at Lanchester. You can read a bit about the governors on our school website. On Tuesday, Reception, Year 1 and Year 2/3 enjoyed listening to a brilliant storyteller as the first of our events linked to World Book Day. The children were mesmerised by her performance and had a great time. That afternoon also saw Year 4 host their Expos. The children shared their learning with confidence, demonstrating a real depth to their knowledge. On Wednesday and Thursday younger classes were accompanied to West Herts College to watch performances from their drama students which were very entertaining and had many children in fits of giggles. Thursday also saw us sharing reading through a book swap, reading buddies and the wonderfully creative 'Book in a Box' entries. A picture of the winners is further down the newsletter - they were incredible!
Values: World Book Day gave us the platform for creativity this week. In our celebration assembly, we recognised children who bring imaginative ideas and suggestions to the classroom on a regular basis. It is always rewarding to hear from teachers about the brilliance the children have demonstrated throughout the week. Next week, we focus on curiosity and the words Lynn Nottage - 'Replace judgement with curiosity.'
Votes for Schools: This week, we discussed 'Do we need more career role models?' in KS2 and 'Do you want to learn more about different jobs?' in KS1. There was some interesting points raised about the growing influence of AI and how many of the careers we know now will still be available when the children are adults.
Talent Show: Auditions take place at lunchtimes (Wed-Fri) next week. If your child has a passion, encourage them to share it. The talent show will replace our usual end of term assembly and is for pupils only.
Parents' Evenings: This term we will once again be using our Arbor system to book appointments for parents' evenings. You will be able to book from 6pm on Friday 13th March. Please be sure to set up the app to ensure you can book your slot. Follow this link and click 'Forgot your password?' to set up your account. Support can be found here.
I hope you all have an enjoyable and relaxing weekend.
Best wishes,
Mr. Matt Morey - Headteacher

Class News
We have had a fun-packed week in Reception. In celebration of World Book Day, we were lucky enough to be invited to the college to watch a performance of The Pink Panther, which the children thoroughly enjoyed. We have had a visit from a storyteller who immersed us in the story of Talulah the Turtle who turned the tide and we have enjoyed sharing stories with children in year 6. To link our topic of planting and growing and our Talk for Writing story of Jack and the Beanstalk, we planted our very own beans and have enjoyed discussing what might be at the top of the beanstalks when they’re grown.
This week, our Year 1 mathematicians became Architects and Builders to master numbers up to 50! Working in small teams, the children used "treasure" and tens-frames to bring abstract numbers to life. This hands-on challenge helped the children visualize exactly how larger numbers are constructed. We are so impressed with their teamwork and their growing "number sense"!
What a fantastic week it has been in Year 2/3, full of creativity, fun, and delicious learning! The children got hands-on in the kitchen, cooking a tasty vegetable stir-fry and they absolutely loved every bite.
Our World Book Day celebrations were just as exciting! The children were inspired by a visit from the amazing storyteller Liz Frost, and many left buzzing with ideas, eager to write their own stories and dream of becoming authors. They also took part in a range of fun World Book Day activities, exploring books and stories in all sorts of creative ways. To top off the week, all three classes enjoyed a special trip to West Herts College to watch one of the shows 'Scooby-Doo' or 'Miraculous' which had everyone laughing and cheering! A huge well done to all the children who created a Book in a Box; your imagination and effort were truly amazing.
It has been a busy and exciting week in Year 4! In English, the children have been busy becoming expert storytellers, creating detailed story maps and building a toolkit to help them write the perfect recount. We have also dived into the world of fractions in Maths, while our World Book Day celebrations were a huge success; the children wrote fantastic book reviews, created mini books and enjoyed a special trip to West Herts College to watch a live play. Above all, the children worked incredibly hard on their Class Expo and were so proud to share their hard work with you. Thank you to all the parents who came along to support them—it was wonderful to see their learning in the spotlight!
Year 5 has recently begun exploring discussion texts and learning how to conduct a healthy, unbiased debate. Our 'Big Question' was: 'Do monsters like Grendel really exist?' It was fantastic to hear the children defending their positions with such logical and respectful arguments. In Science, we took a hands-on approach by dissecting daffodils to identify and label the different parts of a flowering plant. We topped off this busy week with some fantastic World Book Day activities, celebrating our collective love for a good story.
This week, Year 6 have shown great creativity and readiness in their learning. Linked to World Book Day, the children designed impressive 3-D models using Tinkercad and explored their ideas thoughtfully. They have also worked hard to publish their balanced argument outcomes, taking pride in their writing. In addition, some children enjoyed beginning a new narrative writing project with Mr Morey and have made a positive start.
The team reviewed the Personal Learning Plans (PLPs) in place to support our SEN pupils. Mr Sanderson led the session supporting teachers to ensure strategies and targets are appropriate. We also began some work behind the scenes reviewing the quality of our curriculum, subject by subject, so that we can identify future focus areas.
We hope you've all had a great week.
