Spring Term Newsletter #31
16th May 2025
Dear Parents and Carers,
What a busy week it has been here at Lanchester: children have been to the local mosque, Verulamium, Mead Open Farm and the Harry Potter Studios; Year 6 completed their SATS tests and the staff embarked on a sign language taster session. Nobody wanted to miss out and attendance this week is 97% which is excellent.
Values: Our focus on 'respect' comes to an end next week and we will focus on caring for the school environment: the building, the grounds and the equipment. It has been really pleasing to see an improvement in the 'respect' we show in school, particularly in the dining hall.
SATS: I am incredibly impressed and proud of the way the Year 6 children approached SATS this week. They were well prepared, focused and determined in the tests and supportive of each other throughout. They have been excellent role models this year. I wanted to thank parents for ensuring all the children were in for SATS Breakfast and ready for the tests. Lastly, a huge thank you to the Year 6 team who have worked so hard to prepare the children and to the wider staff team who have rallied round and supported the logistics and timetabling requirements of the week. Team work makes the dream work.
There are two big events happening this weekend - The FA Cup Final and Eurovision - and the sunshine looks set to continue. Whatever you choose to do, I hope you all get a chance to relax and have fun.
Best wishes,
Mr. Matt Morey - Headteacher

Each term the house points are reset and we begin a new competition. To enhance the work we are doing on respect, dojos for respect are now worth two points. Children’s attitude to learning has been recognised through the collection of dojo points, which are then totalled as house points across the school. Every child continues to show their commitment to being Ready, Respectful and Resilient, earning points for their house.
Here’s how the points stand:
1st: Curie with 1921 points (+369 since last week)
2nd: Sharman with 1902 points (+378 since last week)
3rd: Carver with 1882 points (+425 since last week)
4th: Alhazen with 1866 points (+395 since last week)
Let’s keep up the great work and continue to support each other as we aim for the top!
Class News
This week has been a busy one in Reception. We have innovated our class story map and had some wonderful ideas from all children. To support our story of Farmer Duck, we went on a trip to the farm where the children thoroughly enjoyed seeing farm animals up close. We have also mapped a recount of the day. In maths, we have been securing the foundations of subtraction skills.
This week in Year 1, the children have been diving into the magical world of 'The Storm Whale'. They explored their imaginations by writing their own innovative stories inspired by the tale. As part of their creative journey, they also produced beautiful artwork, designing settings for their whales and crafting descriptive sentences to bring their scenes to life. It’s been a week full of creativity, storytelling, and wonder!
This week, Year 2 visited the Watford Jamia Mosque and had a fantastic time! They listened to the Imam, heard the beautiful call to prayer, and explored the mosque—including the Holy Qur'an, prayer areas, and stunning Arabic calligraphy. The children asked thoughtful questions and learned lots about Islam. A truly inspiring trip!
Year 3 had a fantastic day out on Tuesday to The Verulamium Museum in St Albans. The children thoroughly enjoyed the experience, starting with an exciting train journey. They explored a fascinating collection of Roman artefacts and deepened their understanding of life in Roman Britain. A highlight of the trip was the opportunity to dress up in Roman-inspired tunis and take part in a lively role-play activity, where they recreated scenes from a Roman market.
As part of our Science topic on Sound, the children took part in an exciting sound workshop during our trip to the Harry Potter Studio Tour. They discovered how sound effects are created in films and even had a go at making some themselves! The children thoroughly enjoyed exploring the studio sets, seeing the costumes, and learning about how the Harry Potter films were made. It was a magical and memorable day for all.
This week in Year 5, the children have undertaken two experiments in Science exploring the properties of different materials and their states of matter. We have experimented with dissolving different solutes in water to test their solubility as well as testing how we can remove solutes from solutions through the addition of heat.
A huge well done to our amazing Year 6 pupils for their incredible effort during SATS assessment week! They approached each test with a ready attitude, demonstrating all the hard work and learning they've accomplished throughout the year. We are so proud of their focus, their calm approach, and the fantastic way they supported each other.
Teachers met with parents to review Personal Learning Plans. We also had an enjoyable and practical session exploring British Sign Language basics with Mrs Kuczynska who will be back in school running sessions with each class over the coming weeks.
