Spring Term Newsletter #35
20th June 2025
Dear Parents and Carers,
This week has been our final assessment window of the academic year. Children across school have been demonstrating their ability in reading, writing and maths. It is really rewarding to see the excellent progress made and the determination to be better - very much resilience in action. The theme of reflection and progress continued on Thursday evening at the School Board Meeting where governors met to review the journey we are on at Lanchester. There has been a lot of positives, but plenty to work on too.
Values: Appreciation has been the value of the week linked to Refugee Week and National Thank A Teacher Day on Wednesday. In assemblies we have discussed how fortunate we are and how so many people in the world can only dream of the opportunities we enjoy every day. Class teachers recognised our values champions in assembly today for their reflections and appreciation shown for other members of the school community. Next week, we focus on creativity and will end that week with our vibrant colour run celebration.
Votes for Schools: This week, we explored What do we learn from refugees' experiences? as part of a wider theme of respect and empathy. The assembly and class sessions have provided space for us to appreciate the many things we take for granted: safety and security at home; plenty to eat and drink; access to education. Next week we will consider the question: 'How do we benefit from diversity?'
Colour Run: As part of our ten year anniversary celebrations, the Trust has arranged a colour run on Friday 27th June. This will take place at the end of the afternoon. Please dress children in old clothes as the powder may stain. The Trust will provide a white t-shirt and goggles for all participants. You may want to consider your collection plans that day as the children are likely to be covered in colour! We are very much looking forward to this celebration.
It has been incredibly warm in the building this week making it challenging to stay comfortable. The forecast suggest this will continue into the weekend. Make sure you find ways to cool down and stay hydrated - the splash park, air conditioned spaces and evening walks work well. Whatever you choose to do I hope you have a great weekend.
Best wishes,
Mr. Matt Morey - Headteacher

Children’s attitude to learning has been recognised through the collection of dojo points, which are then totalled as house points across the school. Every child continues to show their commitment to being Ready, Respectful and Resilient, earning points for their house. Each half term the points are reset and a new competition begins. Congratulations to Curie who have jumped to the top spot this week picking up more points this week than they did in the previous two combined:
Here’s how the points stand:
1st: Curie with 1153 points (+576 from last week)

Let’s keep up the great work and continue to support each other as we aim for the top!
Class News
This week in literacy, we have focused on the story 'Oh no, George'. The story ties in with last week's school value of empathy. The children did a great job at identifying the different characters' feelings based on the actions of others. They then had a go at creating an alternative version of the story called, 'Oh yes, George!', where George only made good choices. The children enjoyed coming up with helpful things that George could do to make Harris, his owner, happy.
This week, Year 1 were lucky to take part in a fantastic British Sign Language (BSL) lesson. We learned how to sign the alphabet, spell our names, and even talk about our favourite colours and animals. The children were enthusiastic and quick to pick up new signs — we’re already looking forward to our next session!
This week, our Year 2 pupils began exploring the concept of time. They looked closely at clocks—learning how they’re structured, with different-length hands that help us tell time. The children also had a blast decorating and assembling their own clocks, reinforcing their learning through a hands-on activity. These creative, practical exercises are already helping our little learners connect the idea of “hours” and “minutes” to real-world experiences.
On Tuesday this week, Year 3 enjoyed an educational trip to the Cassiobury Park Education Hub, where they learnt how to identify a variety of trees and plants. Thank you to our wonderful parent volunteers for coming along and supporting year 3 on the trip.
In Maths, children have started learning about money, exploring how to work with pounds and pence using decimals. In English, we've been practising persuasive writing, using strong arguments and persuasive language to convince our readers. In DT, pupils learned about forces in simple machines and worked in groups to successfully build up to three mechanism models, following instructions carefully and supporting each other.
This week the children enjoyed the start of a new talk for writing unit, this term's non fiction focus is on how to inform the reader and the theme of the model text is killer whales. To develop some background knowledge before we start the unit the children were invited to prepare a presentation about a specific topic relating to killer whales. The children worked in groups to produce either a Google Slides presentation, speech or poster and they presented them to their class in the conference.
Year 6 have shown brilliant collaboration this week as rehearsals for Pirates of the Curry Bean ramp up! Pupils have been busy learning their lines and working together to design and build props for the big performance.
As it was Thank A Teacher Day, the staff were given the time to use as they choose this week. In the leadership meeting, we prepared for our School Review Day, later this term, where the Directors of Primary will be in school reviewing our outcomes and progress.
