Spring Term Newsletter #36
27th June 2025
Dear Parents and Carers,
We have reached the end of another productive week in school. As always, children have been working hard and supporting each other. It has been great to see many of the Year 6 children giving their time and energy to younger pupils, particularly on the playground and in sports sessions. As we reach the end of their time at Lanchester, I have been reflecting on their impact as role models and the way they have shaped a culture around hard work and resilience.
Values: Creativity has been our weekly value and links to our core value of resilience - creativity can help us find a solution to a tricky situation. The theme connected to our Votes for Schools exploration of diversity and culminated in the Colour Run today. Next week, we focus on responsibility and the importance of taking ownership of our decisions and their outcomes.
Votes for Schools: This week, children answered 'Do you feel proud to be yourself at school?' as part of a wider theme of diversity and celebrating what makes us all unique. There were some really thoughtful responses in class sessions. Lots of children said they could be themselves while some had more philisophical responses such as 'I'm still trying to figure out who I am.' Next week, we take inspiration from the stars as we explore astronomy and astrology with our key question: 'Is your star sign important to you?'
First Fixture in Five Years: On Thursday afternoon, we took a Y5 football team to Ascot Road for our first sports fixture in five years. The team played with confidence and courage scoring five goals in an end-to-end match. Although we lost 5-7, the game was exciting and the attitude throughout was one of resilience. Thank you to all the parents and staff who organised and attended the game. Hopefully this is the first of many fixtures as we look to broaden our sports provision.
Colour Run: What a great way to celebrate the school's tenth birthday! We were joined by a team from the Trust who powdered the children as they ran the course. It was excellent to see so many excited faces share this moment together. We look forward to the photos that will mark this vibrant celebration.
Staffing for 2025/26: I am really pleased to share with you that all of our excellent teaching team are staying at Lanchester for September. I am incredibly proud of their commitment to the school and your children; they work together and put in so much effort everyday. A separate letter will be emailed to you all next week to share which teachers are in which year groups for September.
Temperatures are set to rise again with Monday looking like a scorcher! Be sure to ready your children: sunscreen, hat and plenty of water, please. This weekend, the Watford Fringe Festival launches with the Cultural Party taking place on The Parade in town. It sounds like an exciting event right on our doorstep and it is free! Whatever you choose to do, have a wonderful weekend.
Best wishes,
Mr. Matt Morey - Headteacher

Class News
In literacy we have looked at the story Avocado Baby. We have linked this to our current PSHE of growing up. We have spoken about health and unhealthy foods and what we need to do to stay healthy. As part of our understanding the world topic of Big Wide World, we have looked at the flags of the different countries that the children were able to identify and had a go at drawing the flags ourselves.
Year 1 have been busy learning about *plants* in science and how bees help with pollination. As part of their learning, the children designed their very own **bee-friendly gardens** at home – and what a fantastic job they did! From colourful flower beds to bee hotels and water dishes, the designs were full of creativity and brilliant ideas to help our buzzing friends. Well done, Year 1!
This week in DT, Year 2 learned about sewing patterns. They were given templates for bag tags, which they carefully cut out and joined using glue. They then designed their own paper models of bag tags in preparation for making a sewn version in the coming weeks. The children were very excited and are looking forward to starting their sewing lessons soon.
This week, year 3 practised identifying different emotions using a fun and interactive Zones of Regulation game. The activity helped the children recognise how feelings like happiness, frustration, excitement and sadness fit into the four colour coded zones: Blue, Green, Yellow and Red. Through games, role play and discussions, they developed their emotional vocabulary and learned strategies to help them stay in or return to the Green Zone- the zone for calm and ready-to-learn behaviour.
This week in Year 4, we’ve been busy learning all about money in Maths. The children practised how to compare and order amounts, as well as calculate totals and solve word problems involving pounds and pence. In English, we explored persuasive writing by creating colourful and informative leaflets to persuade people to visit Watford. The children used powerful language, facts, and creativity to show off what makes our town special. We ended the week on a high with the Colour Run, which was full of fun, laughter, and colourful faces — a fantastic way to celebrate everyone’s hard work!
This week in Year 5 the children have had the opportunity to develop their work from the last half term art unit on expressionism. The children looked at their final piece of work from the unit and held discussions about how they could improve them. They were then given the same picture and resources and went on to recreate their expressionism final pieces ready for a new wall display.
Year 6 have continued their exciting journey into the world of Graffiti Art, drawing inspiration from the vibrant work of artist Ben Eine. This week, pupils focused on recreating the letter 'A' in Eine’s distinctive style, developing their skills in bold lettering and design. They then applied these techniques to create colourful, expressive words that conveyed personal and meaningful messages. The results were both eye-catching and thought-provoking—well done, Year 6!
In our meeting this week, we finalised the logistics for the Colour Run and the visit of boxer, Roberto Lacourt. We also revisited some key elements of our safeguarding procedures to ensure all staff are up to date and informed.
