Spring Term Newsletter #32
5th June 2026
Dear Parents and Carers,
Welcome back to school after the half term break. I hope you all enjoyed the sunny weather which already feels like a distant memory with the monsoons and thunder storms this week. With all the rain outside, it has been good to get settled back in school and into our learning. The staff team made good use of the Inset on Monday: Mr Sanderson trained the support staff on the use of Colourful Semantics to support our writing skills; we also heard from Kate Rayner, a member of staff from Onslow St Audrey's School, who helped us launch a new buddy system for selected pupils; lastly, I popped over to Croxley Danes School to meet Mr Harris and talk about the different ways we can collaborate to enrich our children's learning. There are some exciting opportunities on the horizon!
Values: We discussed ambition this week and how important it can be to set goals and challenge ourselves. Next week, we shine a light on empathy, considering the words of Barack Obama - 'Learning to stand in somebody else’s shoes and see through their eyes... that’s how empathy begins.' We are also looking forward to welcoming you all into school on Thursday morning for Empathy Day where you can join your children in a range of learning tasks before listening to Miss Murphy explain our approach to behaviour management in the school hall.
Votes for Schools: There have been some mature and reflective conversations in school this week as children discussed 'Is it important to learn about everyone's rights? (Rec-Y4) and 'Do we value LGBT+ rights?' (Y5-Y6). There was a general consensus about everyone's rights to be safe, to be educated and to be free from discrimination. Lots of children ercognised the rainbow symbol, particularly from campaigns coordinated through football associations. Next week, we ask the topical question 'Do we live in a United Kingdom?'
A Fond Farewell: Sadly, I need to inform you that Mr Kinsella will be leaving us at the end of term. Mr Kinsella joined Lanchester with me in September 2024 and has proven himself to be an excellent teacher. His drive to provide great teaching and nurture children's talents and personalities have been outstanding. Mr Kinsella is also a wonderful colleague and friend to many of the team. He will be sorely missed. There will be plenty of time to say thank you and goodbye this term. I am, however, pleased to say that Mr Kinsella is the only departure from the teaching team this year and our stable team will be with you all for September. Details about who will be teaching which classes will be released in the coming weeks!
As always, our local area has lots of activities happening this weekend. The Cassiobury Floating Market can be found on the Grand Union Canal towpath in Cassiobury Park and the Watford Volunteer's Fair is in the Harlequin on Saturday (10am-3pm). Pets at Home are hosting a 'Pet Pals' workshop to educate children about pet's emotions (places are limited). Whatever you choose to do, have a great weekend.
Best wishes,
Mr. Matt Morey - Headteacher

Class News
This week in Reception, the children have loved exploring maps as part of our new topic, 'Big Wide World'. We discussed the different features of our local town, chatting about the familiar landmarks, shops and buildings we spot when out and about. The children thoroughly enjoyed drawing these onto a giant class map, which they then used as a fantastic springboard to create imaginative narratives and stories. It has been wonderful to witness their brilliant collaboration, from collectively deciding where specific buildings should be placed to working together to write the shop names.
This week in Year 1, the children have been working incredibly hard on their reading and phonics. We have been so proud of the way they have supported one another during lessons, helping each other to learn new sounds, practise “special friends, Fred Talk, read the word”. The children have shown fantastic teamwork by testing each other, encouraging one another and growing in confidence every day. It has been wonderful to see their enthusiasm and determination as they continue developing their reading skills.
This week in Year 2/3 Art, the children were introduced to our new topic, Beautiful Botanicals, and explored the craft of weaving. They learned that the vertical threads are called the warp and the horizontal threads are called the weft. Using paper and yarn, they practised a simple weaving technique, showing fantastic focus, perseverance, and creativity. The children thoroughly enjoyed the activity and did an amazing job creating their woven designs.
What a busy and productive week in Year 4! We were incredibly impressed by how beautifully the children returned from their breaks, settling down quickly and getting straight to work. In English, we kicked off our new focus on persuasive writing, while in Maths, the children have been mastering money by working with decimals and comparing different amounts. Our Geography lesson took us outside for a fantastic hands-on activity, where the children conducted a traffic survey to investigate local vehicle congestion. To top it all off, we wrapped up a wonderful week with an inspiring author visit that the children absolutely loved!
This week, Year 5 started their summer assessments. The children have been incredibly resilient and have worked to the best of their abilities to apply their learning in a test environment. In Maths, we have also started learning about negative numbers. Meanwhile, in DT, we began preparations for our significant architecture projects; this week, we designed models of Greek buildings, demonstrating our understanding of Greek architecture. It has been a promising start, so watch this space for photos of the finished projects!
Year 6 have been working incredibly hard practicing their lines for the upcoming production. Both classes have also made the tickets for parents and carers, and have begun considering all the props required for the show.
Parents and carers are highly encouraged to complete the recently sent out Google Form to signal the number of tickets they want for the performance.
