Spring Term Newsletter #24
20th March 2026
Dear Parents and Carers,
We have had a productive week in school. Our Y6 children enjoyed a host of adventures at PGL or at a range of venues closer to home. The residential trip is often a core memory for so many children and it has been wonderful to hear so many tales of adventure, resilience and perseverance. Thank you to the staff team who have organised and delivered this experience - it takes a lot of time and effort to get it right. Miss Henney and Mrs Stachurska have successfully completed their professional development and we are looking forward to their return on Monday. This morning the children working with Rock Steady performed to their parents and their peers in assembly showcasing their talents and progress. Speaking of talent, the auditions have been completed and the final list of acts for the Talent Show will be revealed on Monday. We are looking forward to a morning of amazing performances to finish the term!
Values: In assembly on Monday, we discussed the power of 'YET' and how it links to perseverance. A positive mindset is so important when we are faced with challenges: I do not understand this...yet. Such a small word can have a significant impact. Our values champions were recognised for their perseverance in their learning this week.
Votes for Schools: Next week we follow a theme of reflection and self-image as we explore 'Do you know how to listen to your body?' (Y1-Y4) and 'Is there too much focus on appearance.' (Y5-Y6)
Shakespeare Workshops: After the success of the WonderDome, the Friends of Lanchester have funded another exciting and immersive opportunity to start the new term. West End in Schools will be hosting drama workshops for all classes based on Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream. Make sure your children are in school from Tuesday 14th April to take part in this fantastic opportunity.
Parents' Evenings: A final reminder to book your appointment for next week. Booking will close on Monday evening. Please be sure to set up the app to book your slot. Follow this link and click 'Forgot your password?' to set up your account. Support can be found here.
Meningitis Outbreak: The Herts Director of Public Health has written to parents (attachment to the email newletter notification) sharing the current Herts response. Presently, there are no confirmed cases in the county and the situation is being monitored carefully. Symptoms of meningitis can develop suddenly and include: high temperature, sickness, headache, a rash that does not fade under pressure, stiff neck, dislike of bright lights, drowsiness and seizures. NHS information can be found here.
I have started my weekend early, enjoying afternoon tea with the Golden Ticket winners! I hope you all have an enjoyable and relaxing weekend. Eid Mubarak to all our families celebrating today.
Best wishes,
Mr. Matt Morey - Headteacher

Children’s attitude to learning has been recognised through the collection of dojo points, which are then totalled as house points across the school. Every child continues to show their commitment to being Ready, Respectful and Resilient, earning points for their house. Each half term the points are reset and a new competition begins. Alhazen have jumped to the top in the penultimate week of the term! Whose ribbons will decorate the cup next Friday?!? Congratulations to everyone involved. Every point represents a moment of success this term.
Here’s how the points stand:

Class News
This week in reception we have been busy innovating our class story of Jack and the Beanstalk. We have enjoyed changing the characters and some aspects of the class story and have had a go at making our very own story maps with our imaginative ideas. In maths we have been learning about 3D shapes, their properties and recognising 2D shapes within these.
This week in Year 1, the children learned the story of Purim in RE, exploring why it is an important celebration in Judaism. They listened carefully to the story and discussed the key events and characters.
To bring their learning to life, the children made their own graggers (noisemakers) and had great fun using them, just as they are used during Purim celebrations. It was a lovely, hands-on way to deepen their understanding of the festival.
This week in Year 2/3, we have been busy writing information reports about Komodo dragons. The children had the opportunity to research facts and then use their findings to write their own reports, which they published as leaflets. They were especially fascinated by some of the interesting facts they discovered about these incredible animals. In Geography, the children became “map detectives,” exploring clues about how people live and where settlements develop. They learned how to read an OS map of Watford and used the symbol key to identify and understand what different features represent. They really enjoyed using the clues on the map to find out more about the features of Watford.
It has been a fantastic week in Year 4! In English, the children showcased their creativity by completing their innovative recounts, while in Maths, they mastered the challenge of converting between mixed numbers and improper fractions. In Science, the children have been busy exploring electricity, conducting hands-on experiments to identify conductors and insulators. Through hands-on experimentation, the children tested various materials to see which allowed electricity to flow through a circuit and which blocked it. There were some very surprising results when testing different metals and everyday objects!
This week in Year 5, the children investigated the major technological advances made in ancient Baghdad. They learned how scholars built observatories to study the night sky and created the astrolabe, an invention that revolutionised how sailors navigated the seas. To apply this knowledge, the children imagined they were museum curators presenting an exhibit on one of these artefacts, designing their own display labels to showcase what they had learned.
Year 6 have had an action-packed schedule recently, and we are incredibly proud of them! From conquering outdoor challenges at PGL Liddington to navigating the busy streets on our trip to London, the children have taken it all in their stride. They also showed brilliant teamwork during our bowling trip and enjoyed exploring our local Cassiobury Park. Across every single excursion, the class demonstrated outstanding resilience, exemplary behaviour, and a fantastic sense of fun. A huge well done to everyone!
Time was taken to prepare for parents' evening and the Shakespeare immersion week after the Easter break. We have also begun watching short film clips of model lessons to refine our provision. The focus this week was challenging misconceptions.
