Spring Term Newsletter #29
2nd May 2025
Dear Parents and Carers,
The weather would have us believing it was early July not the beginning of May! It has been a glorious week in school and perhaps the sunshine is good for our health as attendance has peaked this week - 99% on both Wednesday and Thursday. It has been lovely to welcome several new families to our school this week and really pleasing to see many of these children recognised as Values Champions in assembly today. We have had a purposeful week with a lot of high quality learning taking place - be sure to check out the 'Class News' section below.
Values: The theme of respect continues and we are seeing some really positive results from the children. There are many more positive conversations as children greet adults in the corridors and are improving their manners in the dining room. Respect for each other and the school underpins all we want to achieve. A respectful community is one that can focus on learning knowing they are safe and valued.
Votes for Schools: We talked about free school meals in assembly to introduce the question 'Should the government meet all the needs of children?' The discussions have raised some valuable points: some families do not need their meals paid for; education is a need to be paid for; the NHS helps us all, especially children. Next week, with the 80th anniversary of VE Day on Thursday, we ask the question 'Is VE Day a day to remember?'
Bikes & Scooters: It is great to see so many pupils taking active journeys to school and we are fortunate to have a large space for parking. There are some children with the same scooters. Please can I ask you to name your scooters and bikes to avoid any confusion at pick up. Thank you.
Lastly, a reminder that it is the Bank Holiday Weekend and school is closed on Monday. I hope you all enjoy the extra day and we will see you bright and early on Tuesday morning.
Best wishes,
Mr. Matt Morey - Headteacher

Each term the house points are reset and we begin a new competition. To enhance the work we are doing on respect, dojos for respect are now worth two points. Children’s attitude to learning has been recognised through the collection of dojo points, which are then totalled as house points across the school. Every child continues to show their commitment to being Ready, Respectful and Resilient, earning points for their house.
Here’s how the points stand:
1st: Sharman with 1085 points (+783 since last week)
2nd: Curie with 1077 points (+770 since last week)
3rd: Carver with 1070 points (+757 since last week)
4th: Alhazen with 1052 points (+740 since last week)
Let’s keep up the great work and continue to support each other as we aim for the top!
Class News
This week in Reception, we have mapped out our story of Farmer Duck. The children have been able to use the story map to retell the story. In maths, we have been looking at ordering numbers between 11 and 20 and representing these numbers with concrete resources. For our understanding the world topic, we have looked at the lifecycle of a butterfly and have created our own life cycles.
This term in Science, Year 1 are learning all about plants. The children have planted broad beans and are observing how they grow and change over the half term. We’re also trying our hand at growing a cactus and have enjoyed exploring a variety of live flowers in the classroom. These hands-on experiences are helping the children understand the different types of plants and how they grow.
This week in Maths, Year 2 explored the concepts of mass, capacity, and volume. The children enjoyed using measuring jugs and various beakers to investigate the amount of liquid different containers could hold. We also had lively discussions about the capacity of kitchen items, such as teaspoons, tablespoons, and eggcups, helping children to make real-life connections with their learning. This practical approach supported their understanding of the difference between capacity (the total amount a container can hold) and volume (the amount it currently contains).
This week in science, Year 3 investigated which materials around the classroom were magnetic or not. They found it intriguing that all magnetic materials were made from different kinds of metals, but not all metals had magnetic properties. We discussed why it would be a bad idea for certain objects to be magnetic, such as jewelry and cutlery.
This week in English, Year 4 have been working on elevating their writing by focusing on character and setting descriptions. They’ve been encouraged to use creative and ambitious vocabulary to bring their ideas to life. It’s been wonderful to see their imaginations shine through in their storytelling.
In Science, the children learned how sound travels. They explored how vibrations move through different materials and enjoyed practical activities that helped them see and hear sound in action. It’s been a fun and engaging week of discovery.
This week in Year 5 the children have begun a new unit in RE focussing on the Christian celebration of Pentecost. The children were taught the story and were then able to develop their knowledge into thinking about what the fruits of the holy spirit may look like in everyday life scenarios. They completed a group sorting activity which required pairing different scenarios to the different fruits of the holy spirit.
This week, Year 6 have deepened their understanding of Hinduism, focusing on the concepts of karma and reincarnation. Through thoughtful discussion and reflection, pupils explored how actions have consequences and how these beliefs shape the lives of Hindus around the world.
The team reviewed the curriculum provision for the summer term (shared in the curriculum newsletters with parents this week). We also explored some resources for the anniversary of VE Day and the upcoming school trips across the year groups.
We hope you all had a lovely Easter break!
