Autumn Term Newsletter #12
28th November 2024
Dear Parents and Carers,
This week has been another great example of our values in action with lots of children showing their resilience as they tackle new learning. It has been excellent to spend time in lots of classes this week seeing all the new learning that takes place. It has also been a week of collaboration sharing ideas and teaching strategies with colleagues from other schools within the Trust.
Values: This week our value has been 'courage' and how it can help us to be resilient. We explored the way courage takes many forms and how it can be such a powerful tool to help with learning. It takes courage to have a go and to get better at a skill; something we should all aspire to.
Votes for Schools: This week, we explored the questions 'Should you know how to prepare for the weather?' (KS1) and 'Should we learn more about coping with extreme weather?' (KS2) The recent changeable weather has been a part of the discussions as we have braved snow showers, thunderstorms and milder sunny days all in the space of a fortnight.
Parent Governor Election: A reminder that we are in the process of assembling a new governing body going forward from the spring term. Nominations are still open for parent governors.
Christmas at Lanchester: It is the season of goodwill so we will be out and about sharing positivity and season greetings. Some of the classes are scheduled to sing at care homes and children's nurseries in the local area. We will also be hosting our own festive sing-a-longs at the end of the school day in the final week of term. The details are below in the 'Upcoming Dates...'
Please Note: school is closed tomorrow (Friday 29th Nov) and also again on Monday (2nd Dec).
I hope you all enjoy some quality family time over the long weekend.
Best wishes,
Mr. Matt Morey - Headteacher

This week, the competition for house points has been as exciting as ever! Children’s attitude to learning has been recognised through the collection of Dojo points, which are then totalled as house points across the school. Every child continues to show their commitment to being Ready, Respectful and Resilient, earning points for their house.
Carver have held on to the top spot this week. Congratulations to Alhazen who have collected an incredible 486 points in a week to jump up into third. The race is tight, and it’s all to play for as we head into next week!

Class News
Reception enjoyed an immersive week exploring the story of The Gingerbread Man. A host of activities saw the children creating gingerbread men, mixing recipes to bake gingerbread men and making traps to capture gingerbread men!
This week, in Maths, Year 1 have been learning to name and recognise 3D shapes. We have made our own 3D shapes in the theme of our English topic, animals.
Our long awaited trip to the Hertfordshire Zoo has finally arrived. Children were so excited to see all the animals and they surely impressed the Zoo staff during the Amazing Adaptation session with their knowledge of animals in their natural habitat. Yes, we braved the chilly weather, but it was worth it to have the whole zoo to ourselves!
This week, Year 3 crafted their very own stone age inspired pots using clay. They used modelling tools to carve repetitive patterns onto the pots before leaving them somewhere warm to dry.
This week, we have worked hard to complete our innovated stories based on our model text of the mighty Aslan, changing the setting and Aslan's personality . In Maths, we've been busy practicing our times tables and creating ways to try and help us remember them. We have also been talking about our digestive system and how our body can absorb nutrients from our food.
Year 5 have spent the week developing their research skills to respond to a range of enquiry questions across various subjects including English, D&T, Science and Geography. This week marked the mid point in our learning journey this half term and we are excited to see where this takes the children.
Building on last week's excellent stitching, Year 6 have shown incredible collaboration, resilience and respect for one-another when sewing their slipper prototypes. In addition to this, within Mathematics, they have solidified their understanding of adding & subtracting fractions by applying their procedural knowledge to contextual problems.
The inspection provided the team with all the professional development and reflection that they could possibly manage in one week, so the staff meeting was postponed. We have a bumper week of training ahead with our Inset Day on Monday and the weekly staff meeting on Wednesday.
Christmas Craftanoon
A huge thanks to everyone who came along to our Christmas Craftanoon sessions. The festive crafts were beautiful and the children all seemed to have a brilliant time.
A massive thank you to Laura Robson and Miss Hayes for running the sessions and to our volunteers, Helen, Alina, Georgie, Harrison and all of the other teachers supporting and making them such fun sessions!
Christmas Fair
With just over a week to go, Christmas Fair preparations are in full swing! We’re incredibly grateful for all of the support you’ve given with donations to make our stalls fabulously festive and fun.
We still need volunteers to help on our stalls. Signing up and sparing an hour of your time can make a huge difference to our fundraising efforts and everything we raise goes back into enriching school life for our children.
Please sign up here: https://volunteersignup.org/3JKHY
We’re still collecting chocolate for the chocolate tombola so please do bring any in next week.
We’re also asking for festive bakes and treats to be brought in on Friday 6th December to sell on the very popular cake stall.
Raffle tickets have been sent home with children for our very popular colour hampers. Please do return ticket stubs, money and any unused tickets to the office by Friday 6th December.
Thanks for all your support!
