Spring Term Newsletter #34
13th June 2025
Dear Parents and Carers,
Rather than being out and about, we have invited visitors in this week. On Monday we had Rachel and Jane from The Serge Hill Project working in the playground. They supported the Eco Council clearing the raised beds and planting new plants. Lots of other curious children joined them and helped with the weeding during their lunch break. On Wednesday we had Frogmore Paper Mill share their knowledge with Year 2 supporting their science work on materials. Year 1 and Year 4 children have been busy completing assessments (Phonics Check and the Multiplication Check) and the team have been really impressed with their approach to the challenge. Well done to all involved and thank you to teachers for facilitating the tests.
Values: Empathy has been the value of the week leading up to 'Empathy Day' on Thursday. We have tried hard to consider the feelings of others in many different situations in school. The children have represented empathy in many ways and we will display their work for all to see. Class teachers recognised our values champions in assembly today for their consideration of others. Next week, we focus on appreciation with a link to National Thank A Teacher Day on Wednesday.
Votes for Schools: This week, we explored 'How do our friendships change over time?' linking to our empathy value. Friendships and social development are a big part of learning and they are a huge part of childhood so it has been really valuable to explore. Next week we will check out the question: What do we learn from refugees' experiences?
Thank A Teacher Day: Ahead of Thank A Teacher Day next Wednesday, I wanted to share my appreciation for the teaching and support teams at Lanchester. I see how hard they work and how much they care about your children: we are a lucky school community. If you would like to drop a short message of appreciation to a member of the team, you can do so through the office, either in person or via email (office@lanchester.herts.sch.uk).
The Great Big Green Week finishes on Sunday. There are local activities available and the weather looks to be good so it's a great opportunity to get outside. If you've been to the local park one too many times, Leavesden Country Park is a short drive/bus journey away and full of great options for children. Whatever you choose to do, have a great weekend.
Best wishes,
Mr. Matt Morey - Headteacher

Class News
This week in literacy, we have looked at the story The 100 Decker Bus. The children have written postcards, described aspects of the story and even created their own deck on the bus. We have seen some fantastic writing from all of the children and they have used their vast imaginations to create our very own class bus. In maths, we have deepened our knowledge of sharing and grouping by using concrete resources to show our understanding.
This week, Year 1 have been busy getting creative in DT and English as we prepare to say a big thank you to the special people in our lives. The children have designed and made beautiful cards and written heartfelt poems to show their appreciation for their dads and role models at home. We are so proud of the thought and care they've put into their work – it’s sure to bring big smiles this Father’s Day!
This week Year 2 children had the exciting opportunity to welcome a special visitor from Frogmore Paper Mill, the world's oldest mechanised paper mill, right into our school. Located in Hemel Hempstead, Frogmore Mill is renowned for its rich history and hands-on educational programs. The visitors introduced students to the fascinating world of papermaking. Some pupils rolled up their sleeves to create their own handmade paper, learning about the materials and processes involved.
Last week, Year 3 rolled up their sleeves and planted sunflower seeds as part of their science unit on plant growth. They’re now carefully observing the seedlings as they begin to sprout and grow. Through this exciting project, the children are learning firsthand what plants need to grow healthy and strong—like sunlight, water, and care. There’s great excitement each day as they monitor changes and record their findings. We can’t wait to see how tall their sunflowers will grow!
It’s been a great week in Year 4! In English, the children wrote short persuasive pieces using emotive language and time conjunctions to structure their ideas clearly. In maths, we explored decimals and were so proud of how resilient the children were during the Multiplication Check.
In science, we investigated how the volume of a sound changes with the height a ball is dropped, linking directly to our learning about amplitude.
This week in Year 5, the children have been exploring ideas around empathy and what it means to be empathetic towards others. They shared thoughts about what it means to 'put yourself in somebody else's shoes' and then used these ideas to create a piece of artwork based on a quote about empathy.
This week, Year 6 have shown the school's core values of ready, respect and resilience when tackling our PSHE lesson on transition. They explored various scenarios linked to moving to secondary school and discussed how they could show empathy in those situations.
We discussed the way our teaching input links to the tasks the children are required to do in each lesson. The teachers model how to be successful before children work independently. We discussed where you start with lesson planning - task or teaching input? We also shared the transition timeline and the upcoming assessment window.
