Autumn Term Newsletter #7
16th October 2026
Dear Parents and Carers,
This week the leadership team have been in lots of lessons reviewing our writing sequence and considering our provision through the lens of inclusion. It has been great to hear from so many children talking passionately about their writing. English is a core part of a broader curriculum and I joined a webinar yesterday with other school leaders as we start to get ready for the upcoming changes to the National Curriculum. Getting organised early will enable us to build an excellent curriculum preparing children for an evolving world.
Values: This week, our value has been responsibility and the words of Mahatma Gandhi 'The future depends on what we do in the present.' The Junior Leadership Team (JLT) helped to lead the assembly sharing examples of responsibility from their daily lives. Next week, we shine a light on courage: 'One child, one teacher, one book, one pen can change the world' - Malala Yousafzai.
Votes for Schools: 'Is it easy to make healthy choices?' (Rec-Y4) and 'Should vapes have plain packaging?' (Y5-Y6) led to some interesting outcomes. Older children were firmly in agreement that vapes should have plain packaging explaining that they are currently too eye-catching. Younger children found it hard to make healthy choices because lots of snacks and treats taste great. We need to ensure we use our DT lessons to make tasty and healthy food!
Parents' Evenings: A final reminder for parents who have not yet booked! You can now book your slots through the Arbor app. Follow this link and click 'Forgot your password?' to set up your account. Support can be found here.
Community and Cultural Celebrations: We want still looking for parents to join our celebration working party. If you have any ideas or time, please complete this quick form to register your interest.
It will be cold and dry this weekend. Perfect weather for the Cassiobury Parkrun on Sunday or a trip to the cycle hub at the King George Playing Fields. For those wishing to test their resilience, Watford FC are playing at home on Saturday! Have a great weekend.
Best wishes,
Mr. Matt Morey - Headteacher

Children’s attitude to learning has been recognised through the collection of dojo points, which are then totalled as house points across the school. Every child continues to show their commitment to being Ready, Respectful and Resilient, earning points for their house. Each half term the points are reset and a new competition begins. Well done to Carver who look to have the title in the bag as we head into the last week of the half term.
Here’s how the points stand:
1st: Carver with 4203 points (+932 points)
2nd: Alhazen with 3998 points (+923 points)

Let’s keep up the great work and continue to support each other as we aim for the top!
Class News
This week in Reception, we have focussed on the story Go Away, Big Green Monster! We have seen a wonderful use of descriptive language from the children and their recall of the specific description of the big green monster has been fantastic. The children have had opportunities to create their own monsters and use some great adjectives to describe the ones they have made. In maths, we have begun looking at shapes, such as circles and triangles and sorting them into groups based on their properties.
Year 2 turned into mini-detectives this week as they stepped outdoors to explore the fascinating world of minibeasts, insects and microhabitats. Working in groups, the children demonstrated brilliant curiosity as they peered under logs, searched through leaf litter and closely examined soil habitats.
This week in Art, Year 3/4 have been exploring artwork from different times and cultures. We learnt about the Aboriginal people, the First People of Australia, whose culture dates back over 50,000 years! The children were fascinated to discover the stories and meanings behind Aboriginal art, particularly the beautiful and colourful dot paintings, one of the most recognisable forms of Aboriginal artwork. They thoroughly enjoyed listening to traditional stories and bringing their learning to life by creating their own dot paintings.
This week in Year 5, the children took on the role of researchers in Science as they explored the different moons orbiting the planets across our solar system. In Maths, we successfully wrapped up our unit on addition and subtraction, consolidating key calculation methods and problem-solving skills built over the past few weeks.
We also kicked off our poetry unit with a fantastic hook: pupils cut out newspaper words to craft their own poems. Both teachers and children loved experimenting with language and structure—so, to quote one of the poems, "Brace yourself for this masterpiece!"
Year 6 completed their published copies of their writing this week, showing fantastic care and pride in their work. Both classes applied their skills and knowledge brilliantly to produce a travel brochure to an exceptional standard. We are excited to speak with parents and carers at parents evening next week to discuss all the progress their child has made.
