Autumn Term Newsletter #9
6th November 2026
Dear Parents and Carers,
Autumn has finally arrived: the temperature has fallen and the trees have dropped their leaves, adding a natural source of entertainment to the playground. This week has also seen the launch of our new lunchtime clubs offering a wider range of opportunities to all. There are still spaces in some clubs so be sure to sign up your children, if they are interested. November is a month of celebration as we remember the story of Bonfire Night and the festivities of Diwali begin today - Shubh Deepavali to all enjoying the Festival of Lights.
Values: This week, we have launched a 5-week focus on respect using the words of Floella Benjamin to guide us: ‘Be proud of who you are, treat everyone with respect, and always be kind.’ In assembly on Monday, we shared five elements to respect: listening, manners, fairness, caring and acceptance. We added BSL signs to each. Check in with your children and see if they can share them with you. Next week, staying on the same theme, we find inspiration from Tanni Grey-Thompson: ‘Rules and fair play aren’t there to stop our fun - they make sure everybody is kept safe, included, and given an equal chance.’
Votes for Schools: Next week, we explore the question: 'Should fireworks be quieter?' in response to recent consideration by the government to reduce the noise limit for fireworks by 50%.
Parent Feedback: All schools in Danes Educational Trust use The Engagement Platform (TEP) to survey pupils and staff. Now, the survey has been adapted to create a parent version. The survey is anonymous, optional and can be completed in a range of languages. Honest feedback helps us to shape the school to meet the needs of our community. You can access the survey here.
School Photos: A quick reminder to brush your hair, clean your teeth and put on a clean jumper on Monday 9th November for the individual and sibling photos. The photographer will be in school for the morning.
Guinness World Record: On Thursday 8th October we joined the largest 'Take 10 to Read' event ever held setting a new world record for the most people reading online in 12 hours. A bit of fun in school and a great way to promote reading.
Penalty Shootout: Good luck to our team who will be competing in the penalty shootout on the pitch at half time during the Watford FC match at Vicarage Road on Saturday. It is a great way to test our key values as they will be ready to compete, respectful of their opponents and resilient to step up and shoot in front of a large crowd.
Cassiobury Park is the place to be on Saturday evening for the best local firework display and it is completely free! If you cannot wait, or want to double the fun, Abbots Langley is hosting their firework display this evening. Whatever you choose to do, have a great weekend!
Best wishes,
Mr. Matt Morey - Headteacher

Every child continues to show their commitment to being Ready, Respectful and Resilient, earning points for their house. Each half term the points are reset and a new competition begins. Well done to Alhazen who powered to the top early on and maintained their lead to take the title this half term.
Here’s how the points stand:

Class News
This week in reception we have been looking at festivals of light. The children have learnt about birthdays, Diwali, bonfire night and Remembrance Day. In maths we have been looking at the numbers 4 and 5. The children have demonstrated a great understanding of these numbers and have confidently shown how to represent these using concrete resources.
This week, Year 1 have been letting their imaginations shine! Inspired by the idea of catching a star, the children created some wonderful pieces of artwork to show us how they would catch one of their very own. We had some fantastic and creative ideas, from building a ladder all the way to the moon to designing clever ways of reaching up into the night sky. The children used their creativity, imagination and artistic skills to bring their ideas to life.
We were so impressed by the thought and imagination that went into every piece. Perhaps we have some budding inventors in Year 1!
Year 2 has been studying the features of planet Earth. The children began by exploring how our world is divided into key landmasses and seven continents, framed by oceans and seas. Building on this geographical knowledge, they focused on local habitats, examining the different types of animals that live in our local environment and how these habitats provide what they need to survive.
This week in Year 3/4 RE, we have been learning about Diwali, the Hindu Festival of Lights. The children explored how it celebrates the victory of good over evil and light over darkness. We also enjoyed listening to the story of Rama and Sita and learning how people welcomed them home by lighting beautiful lamps. To bring our learning to life, the children made their own diya lamps, just like those used to decorate homes during Diwali. The children are also looking forward to enjoying the fireworks for Diwali and Bonfire Night this weekend.
This week, Year 5 launched their new unit on explanation texts. To hook their imagination, the children created artwork depicting "shadow panthers"—a fictional creature that became extinct due to light pollution. They used oil pastels to draw glowing street lamp beams and layered cut-out panther silhouettes over the light. This creative starter acts as a gateway to writing explanation texts across a variety of topics.
Alongside this, we started our first geography lesson by tackling our initial enquiry question: "How is the Earth's structure similar to an onion?" It has been a busy and inquisitive start to the second half-term.
This term Year 6 are thrilled to welcome coaches from Watford FC Community Sports & Education Trust to launch the Premier League Primary Stars PSHE programme. During this week's launch session, the children explored the essential values that foster strong teamwork and collaboration, while also taking time to reflect on the personal goals they hope to achieve before the end of term. To help everyone connect, the class took part in a lively game of bingo, racing around to discover 20 unique facts about their peers!
We look forward to seeing Year 6 build on these teamwork skills as the programme continues over the coming weeks.
Welcome back after half term, we hope you had a lovely break. This half term is always one of your busiest for events and we’re looking forward to lots of festive fun!
