Spring Term Newsletter #16
10th January 2025
Dear Parents and Carers,
Happy New Year (if it's not too late to say that) and welcome back to the start of the spring term. I hope that you all enjoyed a relaxing festive period. The children have come back to school eager to learn and build upon all the great things we achieved in the autumn term. The staff were back on Monday busy looking at new ways to structure our teaching along with extra ways to engage and motivate the children. I met with the leadership team on Wednesday to refine the improvements we have lined up for the term. It has been back to business as usual this week!
Values: This week our value has been 'ready'. We talked on Tuesday about New Year's resolutions and the importance of setting goals for ourselves, along with some strategies to ensure we stick to the task we set. Our values champions were recognised today in assembly for their focused and ready start to the new term. Next week, our value will be 'respect' as we continue to revisit our core '3Rs'.
Votes for Schools: This week, we explored 'Should lessons start later in the day?' after discussing the impact of good sleep and why it is important for us in assembly on Tuesday. While some agreed, many of the children wanted the school day to start earlier (and finish earlier too!).
Attendance: This week whole school attendance is 91.5%. This is a long way short of the expectation of 95%. Our learning is sequential and each day missed has an impact. Please do all you can to ensure children are able to come to school each day.
Volunteers Required: I would like to ask for parents to come in to school to hear children read. Daily reading is a great way to consolidate new skills and improve fluency. A group of parent helpers would enable us to provide further capacity for daily reading. If you are interested - or know of a grandparent with some free time on their hands - more details will be shared next week via email.
Parent Governors: The vote for parent governors will open shortly and be conducted via a Google Form. There are four candidates for you to choose from. You must vote for the two you believe are best suited to the role. The link will be sent to you shortly.
It is going to be cold this weekend, but be brave, wrap up and venture out to get some fresh air and sunshine this weekend. If you can escape the light pollution, evenings should be clear and there is a chance to see the Quadrantid meteor shower. Whatever you choose to do, have a great weekend.
Best wishes,
Mr. Matt Morey - Headteacher

This week, the competition for house points has been as close as it can get! Only 10 points separate the four houses. Well done to Alhazen who sit top of the table for the first time. Children’s attitude to learning has been recognised through the collection of Dojo points, which are then totalled as house points across the school. Every child continues to show their commitment to being Ready, Respectful and Resilient, earning points for their house.
Here’s how the points stand:
1st: Alhazen with 276 points
2nd: Sharman with 269 points
3rd: Curie with 268 points
4th: Carver with 266 points
Let’s keep up the great work and continue to support each other as we aim for the top!
Class News
This week in reception we went on a journey around the school to find a key to a locked box as part of our talk for writing lessons, this term we are looking at journey stories. We visited different adults around the school to see if they had a key to unlock the box. In maths we have been securing our knowledge of the numbers 0-5. The cold weather has provided a fantastic opportunity to explore and learn about ice and snow, which the children have thoroughly enjoyed.
Year 1 has embarked on an exciting new science topic: Animals including humans! We had a fun learning experience labeling the body parts of one of our classmates. It was a hands-on way to explore the human body and learn some important vocabulary.
Year 2 have started the New Year being Ready, Respectful and Resilient. In English, we have begun the new unit of learning which is based on the text "The Owl Who Lost Its Twoo" and focuses on character description. To ensure that all children are engaged and active learners, we completed a creative task to design and make their own owl masks. The results were stunning and all the masks currently feature on display wall in both classrooms!
This half week in art, Year 3 demonstrated great resilience when they were learning how to draw the outlines and basic features of their partner. They worked hard to refine their skills in sketching, shading and making their drawings as realistic as possible.
This week, our Year 4 pupils have been unlocking their imaginations as they explore the theme of a “mystery door” for our next unit of writing. From enchanted forests to secret laboratories and even portals to other worlds, their ideas have been as varied as they are inventive. In Science we have been investiagting the different states of matter; solids, liquids and gasses and applying it to the real world in Geography, where we have looked at the Water cycle.
This week, our Year 5 pupils have been channeling their creativity into the world of action stories by designing their very own heroes and villains. From brave adventurers with extraordinary abilities to cunning masterminds with sinister plans, their imaginations have been in full swing!
This week, our Year 6 pupils have been sharpening their writing skills as they delve into punctuating direct speech with inverted commas and reported clauses. From lively conversations between adventurous characters to heartfelt dialogues in moving narratives, they have been learning how to bring their stories to life with precision and flair.
This week we introduced our new structure for lessons to the teaching team. We reviewed the core principles behind effective teaching and how we apply them across the curriculum. We explored the impact of identifying and addressing misconceptions within children's learning.
Hope you all had a lovely festive break. We've got lots coming up in 2025 and will share our planned dates with you as soon as we can.
