Autumn Term Newsletter #14
13th December 2024
Dear Parents and Carers,
It has been a week of determination and challenge as we completed Assessment Week across the school. The assessments provide valuable information we use to adapt our teaching for next term. I will be meeting with the class teachers to review the outcomes and ensure our provision matches the needs of the children. We managed to fit in some much needed entertainment alongside the hard work with the whole-school trip to the Palace Theatre to watch the pantomime. It was an engaging and interactive performance throughout and it was lovely to see so many happy faces of all ages having fun. I would like to say a quick thank you to all the parents and staff who helped with the logistics and practicalities of the day, along with a special thank you to Mrs Bridgewater who coordinated the day.
Christmas Fair: What a wonderful community event it was! A huge thank you to the PTA members who coordinated the event. Thank you as well to all the parents, pupils and staff who helped out with stalls, organisation and tidying. It was great to see everyone come together as a community. You will have to click into the PTA section below to see how much money was raised.
Values: This week our value has been 'perseverance'. We watched a short clip about Derek Redmond and his desire to continue, even when his race had been ruined by injury. We talked about what perseverance might look like in school and why it is a useful trait to develop. For the last week of term, our value will be 'kindness' and how we need to look after each other as we reach the end of a very long term.
Votes for Schools: This week, we explored 'Do emojis help you to communicate?' Lots of children agreed, explaining that images make messages quicker to share and understand. Some disagreed, suggesting it can be hard to interpret some emojis. It has been pleasing to hear children articulate themselves clearly and with confidence. Next week, our big question will be 'Is winter the best time to think about what is important to you?'
Christmas at Lanchester: With Christmas dinner, Christmas Jumper Day and the pantomime all behind us, we are left with our sing-a-long events at the end of each day. Reception will be singing in the Small Hall. Other year groups will be outside on the sports playground to end each day with some seasonal songs. The timetable is in the Upcoming Dates... section below.
As we get closer to Christmas, there are lots of festive opportunities around. The Wishmas Owl is in the town and free bookings can be made here. I will be enjoying a 'Breakfast with Santa' event tomorrow morning with my own children. Whatever you choose to do, be sure to enjoy some quality family time.
Best wishes,
Mr. Matt Morey - Headteacher

This week, the competition for house points has been as exciting as ever! Children’s attitude to learning has been recognised through the collection of Dojo points, which are then totalled as house points across the school. Every child continues to show their commitment to being Ready, Respectful and Resilient, earning points for their house.
Curie have jumped to the top once more as we have seen a surge in the house points awarded. They look to have an uncatchable lead going into the last week of term. Can Carver reclaim the top spot? Will Sharman make a late surge? It’s all to play for as we head into next week!
Here’s how the points stand:
1st: Curie with 2384 points (+1066)
2nd: Carver with 2224 points (+892)
3rd: Sharman with 2184 points (+870)
4th: Alhazen with 2136 points (+962)
Let’s keep up the great work and continue to support each other as we aim for the top!
Class News
This week in reception we have been looking at arctic animals and learning about winter. The children have enjoyed sharing what they have learned through a variety of fun activities. We thoroughly enjoyed our first school trip to the pantomime and drew some great pictures of our favourite part of the show!
Year 1 have been immersed in a festive project, showcasing their creativity and learning. They've molded clay into beautiful decorations and used their phonics skills to write heartfelt messages on gift tags. By thoughtfully considering their recipients, they've demonstrated a strong sense of empathy and kindness.
The Winter's Here and children in Year 2 know it so well! This week we have indulged ourselves in poetry and as a hook we explored experimental art techniques involving wax and paints to create picturesque winter scenes. This led us to discussing in detail the seasonal imagery used in the poem - you guessed it - “The Winter’s Here” and the focus was on elevating our simple sentences by using descriptive language including expanded noun phrases.
Some of our year 3 children took part in a carol singing session this morning to spread some festive cheer at the local Toad Hall Nursery. Despite some minor technical issues, they sang beautifully without a backing track- well done Year 3, we are so proud of you! Other children are singing next week.
This week, Year 4 students have been diving into the fascinating world of teeth! In Science, they have been learning about the different types of teeth and their specific functions. The children have explored how incisors help with cutting food, canines tear food, and molars grind and crush. They also studied how our teeth work together to break down food for digestion.
This week, Year 5 continued their exploration of our science focus - Forces. Students worked collaboratively to create parachutes of varying materials to test whether the rate of descent is effected in different ways by different materials.
Year 6 showcased their creativity and readiness in writing explanation texts with a mythical twist. From exploring “Why dragons hoard gold?” to uncovering “How phoenixes are reborn,” the children combined imaginative ideas with detailed explanations. They worked hard to structure their writing effectively, using technical language and logical sequencing. Their resilience in refining their drafts and respecting the writing process has resulted in some truly magical outcomes. We’re incredibly proud of their efforts and the high-quality work they’ve produced!
In our meeting this week, the team reviewed the assessment process to ensure it works efficiently. I spent some time with Mrs Tang monitoring the quality of writing in children's books as part of our monitoring cycle. We also discussed the priorities and training we will be completing in the spring term.
Christmas Fair
A massive thank you to everyone who supported the Christmas Fair. Thank you to everyone who came and enjoyed the day, all of our volunteers and all of the teachers who made the day a fabulously festive one.
It was brilliant to have the Mayor there to hear the choir sing and open our all weather flooring. Despite Storm Darragh, he had a look at the facilities and was really impressed with what has been done.
We raised over £3,000 which is brilliant and we’ll be working with Mr Morey on what we can best support the school with.
