Spring Term Newsletter #21
14th February 2025
Dear Parents and Carers,
It has been a week of reflection at school as we reach half term and the midpoint of the academic year. We have made some great progress in many areas and there is still much to do. There have been some rewarding enrichment opportunities and some valuable whole-school events to support our learning journeys. I visited Mr Bostock and his team at De Havilland Primary School yesterday to discuss how we might collaborate and share good practice between our schools. We can achieve so much more when we work together.
Values: This week our value has been 'reflection' and we explored how this can be an important tool to help us learn. In Celebration Assembly, teachers recognised pupils who are reflective and look to make improvements and progress using their own initiative. After half term, our value will be 'responsibility' and we will consider how we can help others as well as taking responsibility for ourselves.
Votes for Schools: This week has seen some mature conversations around the challenges of staying safe online. Children discussed friendship request scenarios and how they can stay safe by hiding their personal details when online. Once again, our insightful comments have made the weekly presentation shared with schools. Over 60,000 children read the views of our pupils.
World Book Day: You should have received a wooden spoon in the school bag today. For World Book Day, we are asking all children to decorate a spoon as their favourite book character. These characters will then become part of our learning on the day as we create and merge stories. You can find plenty of inspiration online, if you need some craft tips.
Class Expos: After half term, classes will be holding 'Expos' where they set the classroom up to display all of their learning across the curriculum. You will be able to tour the room, see the work and engage in some demonstrations with the children. These sessions will run on a designated day from 2.45pm until the end of the school day providing an opportunity for you to see all that has been achieved this year. See Diary Dates... below.
Mrs Bridgewater: Sadly, we have said goodbye to Mrs Bridgewater today. She has worked at Lanchester for over 9 years and has been a source of knowledge and stability helping many colleagues to ensure the school is well run. Personally, she has been a massive help to me as I have adapted to a new school and the responsibility of headship. While we are sad to see her go, we wish her all the best in her new role at a local secondary school.
Half Term Activities: We are very lucky to live in a busy town with so many opportunities on our doorstep. There are a lot of activities to join throughout the week: Atria Watford are hosting daily craft challenges in Charter Place; the leisure centre has bouncy castle sessions Mon-Thu; and lots of the restaurants in town are offering 'kids eat free' options too.
I hope you all enjoy a relaxing half term spent with friends and family.
Best wishes,
Mr. Matt Morey - Headteacher

Congratulations to Delhi for achieving an excellent attendance rate of 98.2%, and Cairo in second with 98.1%. These results highlight our collective dedication to education and growth. Let's continue this momentum and strive for even higher attendance rates across all classes in the coming months!

This term, we have collected 9965 points across the houses. That is a lot of excellent choices and hard work across the school. Alhazen have taken the title this half term! They made a strong start to the term, Curie overtook them, but they're back to finish as winners. Children’s attitude to learning has been recognised through the collection of Dojo points, which are then totalled as house points across the school. Every child continues to show their commitment to being Ready, Respectful and Resilient, earning points for their house.
Here’s how the points stand:
1st: Alhazen with 2613 points (+419 from last week)
2nd: Curie with 2584 points (+351 from last week)
3rd: Sharman with 2485 points (+394 from last week)
4th: Carver with 2283 points (+301 from last week)
Let’s keep up the great work and continue to support each other as we aim for the top!
Class News
We have had a busy week in Reception! On Wednesday, we visited Watford Central Library, where the children enjoyed being immersed in a wide selection of stories. In maths, we have consolidated our learning from this half term. We ended our UTW topic on starry night where the children learned about how rockets are launched, the name of the force that propels them and the names of the key features of a rocket. They have thoroughly enjoyed making rockets of their own!
Year One students have explored the work of renowned artist James Rizzi in their art unit. Together, we have created a vibrant display inspired by his dynamic cityscapes, particularly focusing on his portrayal of urban life and emotions. We have also linked this to our geography unit, which has focused on landmarks in Watford, allowing the children to connect their artistic creations with familiar places in their local area.
This half term, Year 2 children were exploring flowers in Art. We have been looking closely at the colours, shapes and most importantly textures and the way they have been seen by artists across the world. Using different techniques and incorporating elements of sculpture, we have created our own flower art. We could not believe that we achieved such stunning pictures!
Year 3 really enjoyed their visit to The Living Rainforest this week. They were able to see some amazing creatures up close and impressed the tour guides with their thoughtful questions, showing both reflection and curiosity. Thank you to the staff and parents volunteers for coming along and helping out too!
This week, Year 4 has been busy exploring their creativity and scientific thinking! In English, we crafted our own independent setting descriptions, focusing on using expanded noun phrases, fronted adverbials, and figurative language to bring our ideas to life. In Science, we conducted a fair test to investigate whether different liquids, such as water, shampoo, and squash, evaporate when left open over a period of time. After the experiment, we wrote up our conclusions and shared our findings with the class.
This week in Year 5, the children have been continuing their work in Science on the reproduction of plants. They have developed their knowledge to investigate the production of offspring from two parent plants and to support this they have completed a practical which involved dissecting a daffodil to identify all of the reproductive parts of the plant.
Our Year 6 students delivered outstanding work through their dual focus on climate change and creative writing. Their art pieces powerfully contrasted environmental care versus neglect, while their English outcomes demonstrated impressive mastery of flashback narrative techniques. We're incredibly proud of their dedication and creative achievements!
The team continued their preparation for next term by refining the maths sequences we will be working through after half term. Mr Bristow led the team through some adaptations to our use of White Rose Maths resources. We also reviewed events for World Book Day and lined up the assessment calendar too.
