Spring Term Newsletter #25
21st March 2025
Dear Parents and Carers,
There has been lots of learning outside the school this week: Y1 enjoyed a trip to the cinema and Y3 explored the town centre. We are incredibly lucky to have so many learning opportunities on our doorstep and I have been really pleased at the range and number of trips the teachers have led this year. We still have lots lined up including a couple of new outings. I was at training on Wednesday, organised by the Trust, which provided some useful input and a chance to reflect on our systems and routines at Lanchester - it is so important to find time to continue to learn and grow at any age!
Parents' Evenings: Links to booking forms on Google Calendar have been released this week. Please ensure that you book one ten minute appointment per child with each teacher. There are not enough slots for families to book multiple times and additional slots will be deleted. If you need assistance, please come and speak to the office team.
New Governors: The governors are keen to meet you and get your perspective on life at Lanchester. They will be attending parents' evening so please find five minutes to talk to them and tell them about your experiences.
Values: This week we explored 'ambition' and how it can provide focus and motivation to help us to be better. Our values champions were celebrated in assembly for their creativity in their effort in class and across the school completing projects and tasks. Next week, our value is 'collaboration' and we consider the words of Henry Ford - 'If everyone is moving forward together, success takes care of itself.'
Votes for Schools: This week we considered 'Should people always use their real name online?' (KS1) and 'Should people be allowed to be anonymous online?' (KS2). This provoked some engaging debates around the safety of anonymity for children but also the freedom to do and say mean things online. The online world is a tricky one to navigate. Next week we explore 'Is it easy to respect other people's belongings?' (KS1) and 'Should shops do more to reduce shoplifting?' (KS2)
It was great to ditch my coat on gate duty this week with the warm and sunny weather. The weekend looks cloudy but temperatures are good and the days are getting longer. Make sure to get outside and check for the first signs of spring. I look forward to seeing you all in school for parents' evenings next week.
Best wishes,
Mr. Matt Morey - Headteacher

Class News
This week in literacy reception have shown their imaginative side. We have had fun innovating our class story of Jack and the Beanstalk, which is now called The Farmer and the giant tree. We have planted our own beans and have started a bean diary to log our plants progress as it grows. In maths we have been looking at number bonds within 10 using various resources to support understanding.
Year 1 have been busy bringing their learning to life with a fantastic Bright Lights, Big City display! This term, they have explored what makes London such a unique and exciting city, from its famous landmarks to its rich history. A key focus has been the Great Fire of London, where they discovered how the city was transformed by this historic event. Their display showcases all their amazing learning, creativity, and hard work!
To consolidate our understanding of coastal erosion in the UK, children in Year 2 performed an experiment. We placed some sand and water in a clear box and simulated waves crashing into the land. The children observed that the force of the water continuously swept the sand into the water, demonstrating the process of erosion.
On Wednesday, Year 3 ventured on a field trip to our local town of Watford. They prepared an inquiry question which was 'What can visitors see and do in Watford?' The children revisited their learning on human and physical features, focussing on facilities and amenities available to residents and visitors of Watford. The field trip ended with the children exploring a map of the London Overground and discussing transport links to and from Watford Junction Station. Thank you again to all of our fantastic parent helpers!
This week, the children have been innovating their diary entries. They’ve focused on creative writing, personalising their entries and experimenting with different perspectives to make their writing more engaging. In Maths, the children have been using reasoning and problem-solving skills to compare and order mixed numbers. They worked in groups to place fractions and mixed numbers on a number line, carefully considering their values. This hands-on approach has helped the children develop a deeper understanding of fractions and mixed numbers.
This week in Year 5 the children generated ideas for a brand new discussion text with the focus of: should school uniforms be banned in the UK? The children enjoyed exploring for and against this topic, developing their research into a structured box up which they have written up into their own innovative discussion texts. Next week the children will be making their own discussion texts which we are very much looking forward to reading.
Our Year 6 writers demonstrated respect for different viewpoints this week as they crafted balanced discussion texts about wind turbines. The children thoughtfully explored both advantages and disadvantages, showing maturity in considering multiple perspectives. Their writing reflected careful research and a deep understanding that complex issues often require balanced, well-reasoned arguments. An impressive display of analytical thinking from our young authors.
The staff finalised their plans for the summer term and then mapped the Trust's 'Character Curriculum' across our provision exploring strengths and areas for improvement. The leadership team reviewed the marking and feedback across the classes considering how best to improve learning through effective feedback to children.
Last week, Mr. Bristow hosted a parent workshop for those attending the Year 6 residential. Unfortunately, during the parent workshop, there was an error that caused the audio recording to become corrupted. Since then, Mr. Bristow has shown our core value of resilience but was sadly unsuccessful in rescuing it.
For those families unable to attend, Mr. Bristow has uploaded the slides (click here) and is happy to answer specific questions at the end of the school day. To ensure that all families are kept up-to-date, there will be another in-person meeting closer to Year 6's departure date.
