Autumn Term Newsletter #7
18th October 2024
Dear Parents and Carers,
It has been a week of innovation and exploration in school: we have adjusted the timetable putting assemblies into the afternoon to maximise learning time in the morning; Mrs de Garis (Reading lead) has been adapting the structure of reading lessons; and Mr Bristow (Maths lead) has been in classes observing how maths is taught. Miss Murphy and Mrs Tang have also been on important training to strengthen our safeguarding and behaviour processes. We are all on a learning journey at Lanchester!
Thank you to Mrs Henney for taking time on Wednesday evening to share how we teach phonics to parents new to the school. As a parent on the phonics journey with my own daughter, I know how important it is for reading at home and school to align as much as possible.
Punctuality: Lessons start at 9.00am. Although we have a soft start between 8.45 and 9.00, children arriving at 9.00 are not getting into class and ready to learn until 9.05 or later. This interrupts the start of the lesson and leads to a lot of lost learning time. Please endeavour to get your children in school by 8.55.
Values: Our weekly value has been appreciation and how a small sign of thanks can have a big impact on people. This connects to our core value, respect, when we value the contributions of others. Next week, as we reach the end of the half term, our value will be reflection as we consider our learning journey over the last eight weeks.
Votes for Schools: This week classes have explored the importance of an active lifestyle. It also saw our Junior Leadership Team in action for the first time. Four of the JLT are Votes for Schools Youth Ambassadors and they attended a webinar on Wednesday afternoon with children from a host of other schools. They gave their feedback on the sessions we have explored this week and helped to contribute to the upcoming anti-bullying sessions after half term. Next week, the big question will explore the American election asking 'Is it easy to choose a leader?' (Y1-Y2) and 'Should we choose our leaders based on their personality?' (Y3-Y6).
Parents' Evening: Appointments will be held in your children's classrooms. Their books will be in the corridor outside the room for you to enjoy before your meeting. The Chorleywood Book Shop will set up shop in the school foyer bringing a wide selection of books from their excellent stocks. The school receives money from every purchase made so make sure to spend some time browsing. The PTA will also have second-hand uniform available for a small donation.
An eight-week half term is a long one and there are signs of tiredness, particularly within the younger classes (and a few of the staff!). Be sure to give your children the best chance to recharge this weekend: healthy meals, lots of sleep and plenty of fresh air are much needed. The wet weather might keep us all inside, so take the chance to share a great book or a family movie-night. Whatever you do, have a relaxing weekend.
Best wishes,
Mr Matt Morey - Headteacher

House Points
All week, children's attitude to learning is recognised through the collection of Dojo points. These become house points which are totalled across the school each week. Every child is allocated a place in one of our four houses: Alhazen, Carver, Curie and Sharman. The battle for second place continues as Sharman leap Carver. It looks like Curie are going to be the half term winners!

Class News
This week in Reception
This week we have been looking at the traditional tale 'The Magic Porridge Pot'. The children enjoyed giving Mrs Henney instructions about making porridge. In phonics we have now been taught all of the set one single letter sounds. In maths we have been looking at the composition of numbers 0-3.
This week in Year 1
This week in science, we have been experimenting with materials to see which are waterproof and which are absorbent. First we predicted the outcome as a class, then tested the materials and lastly wrote up our findings.
This week in Year 2
This week in Year 2, we have been learning about colour mixing using a block of clay. The children enjoyed using found objects to create prints and patterns on the clay. They then painted the clay and observed how the colours mixed when they repeated the printing process.
This week in Year 3
This week, year 3 have been learning how to further develop their character stories. So far this term, they have learnt to imitate and innovate the model text, 'The Day the Crayons Quit' and have now ended their unit by writing some character stories more independently.
This week in Year 4
We have had an exciting trip to St Albans Abbey. First we met an Anglo Saxon warrior who told us how tough it was to be a warrior over 1,000 years ago. We learnt all about the life of the Anglo Saxons from items they would have used to how they would have grown and prepared food. We explored artefacts and roleplayed as key historical figures. We also made herb butter and an apricot conserve to taste what food would have been like in the past.
This week in Year 5
As we come towards the last week of this half term, students in Year 5 applied themselves diligently across a whole afternoon art session to finalise their art projects. The children were calm, sensible and hard working throughout the entire project. They should be very proud of their efforts because we're very proud of their efforts!
This week in Year 6
This week, Year 6 have begun their work on writing and publishing their own suspense narratives. Year 6 have started to reflect on the effect of their writing and have shown the character skill of collaboration by listening and sharing feedback with one-another. They have realised that more does not always equate to being better! All the pupils in Year 6 are excited to share their final published outcomes with you in next week's newsletter.
This week in Staff Meetings
Mr Bristow shared some the research behind excellent maths teaching that will be the basis of our maths improvement journey. He also shared some useful strategies for teaching times tables, taking the teaching team through their x13 table.
