Spring Term Newsletter #26
28th March 2025
Dear Parents and Carers,
It has been great to see you all in school this week for parents' evenings. The connection between teacher and parents is so important and I thank you for your engagement. The governors were also pleased to talk with many families to help them gain a better understanding of the school community. My first letter to parents in September talked about a village raising a child and it is great to see these collaborative connections happening and helping to improve our provision.
Values: This week we explored 'collaboration' and how working together has so many advantages that support our learning and progress. Our values champions were celebrated in assembly for collaboration throughout the school in lessons, in shared spaces and in the games they play. Next week, our value is 'courage' and we consider the words of JRR Tolkien - 'It is not the strength of the body that counts, but the strength of the spirit.'
Votes for Schools: This week we considered 'Is it easy to respect other people's belongings?' (KS1) and 'Should shops do more to reduce shoplifting?' (KS2). As always, there was a healthy discussion that crossed into the online world and the challenges around digital piracy. Next week, children will consider: 'Do role models help you? (KS1) and 'Are role models important to you?' (KS2)
Surprise Visitor: On Wednesday morning, Watford Central Library rang to say they had Arji Manuelpillai, the performance poet, available after a cancellation. He took the short walk to join us for the afternoon. Arji worked with a select group of pupils and both Year 6 classes to explore poetry using 'your favourite words, in your favourite order'. If you would like to see Arji in action, he has some great mini-lessons online to explore.
Music Lessons: We are pleased to announce the addition of a brass teacher to our team of peripatetic music teachers that visit Lanchester on a weekly basis. If you are interested in your child learning a brass instrument, or indeed any other instrument, we encourage you to contact Herts Music Service for further information. They also have an instrument loan scheme, which may be of interest. Contact details can be found on the flyer below.
Swimming: Today was the last swimming session for Year 5 pupils and it will be Year 4's turn after the Easter break. More information will be shared in a separate letter.
Arbor: At Lanchester we use a platform called Arbor to manage the administration of the school. They have a parent app that can provide access to information and be used for a range of functions, including booking parents' evenings. We will launch this after the Easter break and more details will be emailed to parents shortly.
Vaping/Smoking: Please can I ask parents who vape/smoke to do so away from the school perimeter to be sure that children are not inhaling the fumes. Thank you.
Goodbye, Linda: Today we have said goodbye to Linda who has been working at the school keeping the classrooms clean and tidy for ten years. Over that time she has been a listening ear, a positive smile and a consistent positive presence at Lanchester. She will be missed by the team here as she steps down to spend more time with her family.
End of Term: Friday 4th April is the last day of the spring term. The school day finishes early at 1.15pm.
I hope you all enjoy a relaxing weekend with family and friends.

These results highlight our collective dedication to education and growth. Let's continue this momentum and strive for even higher attendance rates across all classes in the coming months!

Class News
This week in reception we have been busy turning our innovated story into a 5 sentence story. The children have produced some fantastic writing of the story. In maths we have been looking at number bonds to 10 and doubles within 10.
This week in RE, Year 1 learned about the Jewish festival of Purim and the tradition of Mishloach Manot giving gifts of food to friends and family. As part of their learning, the children had a fantastic time baking Hamantaschen, the traditional triangle-shaped cookies enjoyed during the festival. They explored the story of Queen Esther, discussed the importance of kindness and giving, and, of course, had lots of fun baking their delicious treats. What a wonderful way to bring learning to life!
This week in Year 2, we have been learning about measuring lengths and heights in maths. The children practiced using a ruler to measure in centimeters and a meter stick to measure in meters. They put their skills to the test by measuring the length and width of the classroom, as well as other objects around the room. Throughout the activity, they worked collaboratively, which was our focus value of the week.
In preparation for next week's 'Cook Well, Eat Well' lesson on making healthy tacos, Year 3 have designed their own taco packaging. They discussed the ingredients that they would like to put into their tacos next week and came up with their own taco brand names. They also found out that tacos originated from Mexico and is a well-known street food.
This week, Year 4 went on an exciting trip to Cassiobury Park as part of their Geography topic! The children measured the depth of the riverbed using various tools, gaining hands-on experience with their studies. They also enjoyed a fun-filled scavenger hunt, discovering nature’s treasures along the way. It was a fantastic day of learning and adventure, bringing the classroom to life!
Year 5 have continued with their DT unit, 'Eat The Seasons.' Following the tasting and evaluating of different soups, they have designed their own recipes to cook a healthy soup using seasonal vegetables. Today, they took part in their final swimming lesson - a fun session of relay races. We feel very proud of the progress they have made in their swimming; some children have gone from being non-swimmers to confident swimmers in the space of 10 weeks.
The Year 6 students brought their geography and DT learning full circle as they completed their recycled turtle projects - a powerful symbol of environmental awareness. The finished turtles serve as a creative reminder of our responsibility to protect marine life from pollution and climate change. The children showed great pride in their completed pieces, which combined their practical DT skills with their deepened understanding of environmental impact. A fantastic way to conclude our geography unit with these meaningful, hands-on creations.
Staff meeting was postponed this week while teachers met with parents, but the learning never stops at Lanchester. Mr Bristow has successfully completed a two-day course and is now a member of the safeguarding team. Mr Wanford (Director of Education) visited the phonics sessions yesterday and was impressed with the effective routines and engaging learning taking place.
At this week's parent workshop, Mr. Bristow outlined our plans for SATS Week 2025, including our school's preparation strategy and practical revision tips for home learning. Missed the workshop? Access Mr. Bristow's presentation slides by clicking here.
