Spring Term Newsletter #22
28th February 2025
Dear Parents and Carers,
With the start of the new half term has come many new beginnings: Monday evening saw the successful first meeting of the new governing body; Tuesday morning we welcomed parents to our first Inclusion Coffee Morning; this afternoon we hosted the first class 'Expo' as Year 4 showcased their learning to their parents. All of these events help us to build connections within our community as we share ideas and learn together.
Values: This week our value has been 'responsibility' and we discussed who is responsible for our learning. While the teachers and school leaders shape the curriculum, the children have huge responsibility through their engagement and hard work. In Celebration Assembly, teachers recognised pupils who take responsibility for their learning, their friends and the school environment. Next week, our value will be 'empathy' as we explore 'seeing with the eyes of another, listening with the ears of another, and feeling with the heart of another' - Alfred Adler.
Votes for Schools: This week we considered the question 'Can you trust one leader to make all decisions for you? (KS2) and 'Do you find teamwork helpful? (KS1). There were some fascinating opinions shared: some believing one person could get things done quickly, while others valued sharing ideas and working in teams. Next week, in connection with National Careers Week, we will be exploring 'Would you like to start your own business?'.
Lunchtimes: We have launched the new zoning system on the playground at lunchtimes. Both playgrounds now consist of a selection of different areas. There is a construction zone, quiet zone, team games zone, racket sports zone, obstacle course and circus skills. There is a lot to explore and play with outside. Thank you to the Friends of Lanchester who funded the equipment and storage.
School Day Timings: Thank you to those who shared their views on the consultation to open earlier. There are many factors to consider and more time is needed to help families to adapt, if we lengthen the day. There will be no change at Easter. We will review whether to open earlier from September.
World Book Day: With so much going on in school, this should be renamed as World Book Week! We've got lots of classes out on trips, wooden spoons coming in, shared reading, bedtime stories, poet visits and book swaps. We will also be sharing a family challenge with you on Monday giving you ten reading tasks to explore. We have removed the costumes and dress up to focus on the magic that is reading and all that we can experience from immersing ourselves in the pleasure of reading.
Parents' Evening: These will be taking place on Monday 24th March and Wednesday 26th March. We are using different software to book appointments this term. More details will be shared over the coming days.
The forecast promises sunshine all weekend! It's a great time to get active and be outside. It might be the perfect time to dust off the bikes and explore Watford's Green Loop, a 6.5 mile circuit around the town. Whatever you choose to do, have a great weekend.
Best wishes,
Mr. Matt Morey - Headteacher

Attendance this week is 94.8%. Once again, we are just short of the 95% benchmark. Learning cannot take place if children are not in school; it is vital that all children are here every day. Congratulations to Cairo for achieving an excellent attendance rate of 99.4%, and New York in second with 99.2%. These results highlight our collective dedication to education and growth. Let's continue this momentum and strive for even higher attendance rates across all classes in the coming months!

At the start of each half term, we reset the points back to 0 and start a new house competition. Congratulations to Carver who are top with 380 points. It's very close with only 10 points separating all of the houses. Children’s attitude to learning has been recognised through the collection of Dojo points, which are then totalled as house points across the school. Every child continues to show their commitment to being Ready, Respectful and Resilient, earning points for their house.
Here’s how the points stand:
1st: Carver with 380 points
2nd: Sharman with 376 points
3rd: Alhazen with 375 points
4th: Curie with 370 points
Let’s keep up the great work and continue to support each other as we aim for the top!
Class News
This week in literacy we have been hooked into the story of Jack and the Beanstalk. The children found magic beans in the classroom and we had a discussion about what would happen if we hadn't found all of the beans. They have also participated in activities during child initiated learning where the children explored what a beanstalk is. In maths, we have been looking at length and height and the children have demonstrated a good understanding of this concept through various activities.
This week in DT, Year 1 have been reading Beegu. They have planned and designed their own spaceships, which they will be building throughout the unit. Keep an eye out for their spaceships soaring over Lancaster!
An army of Superpotatoes is now guarding both Year 2 classrooms. What fun we had decorating our potatoes with capes, masks and even some hair! The activity sparked children’s curiosity about our next unfolding unit of learning in English - writing non- chronological report based on the focus text ‘Supertato’.
Year 3 started their week with their 'Cook Well, Eat Well' project in D&T, where they explored different methods of cooking. They found out just how versatile a potato is and enjoyed preparing, cooking and then tasting their dishes.
Year 4 has been busy revisiting key math concepts strengthening their arithmetic skills. In English, they worked collaboratively to complete a recount puzzle and practiced writing diary entries to explore recounts further.
Today, Year 4 showcased their hard work during their class expo, where they worked in teams to create posters highlighting all they have learned. We would also like to take a moment to celebrate the creativity and organisational skills demonstrated by the students in organising the expo. Their efforts were truly impressive, and we are proud of the teamwork and commitment they showed.
This week in Year 5, the children have enjoyed participating in a class debate linked to their new English topic: discussion writing. The classrooms became a debate room with the children performing the roles of monsterologists and natural scientists with the aim of debating 'Do Monsters like Grendel Exist?
Year 6 demonstrated excellent scientific understanding while investigating fossil formation. The children explored the complex process of fossilization, learning how remains of plants and animals become preserved over millions of years through layers of sediment.Their curiosity was particularly evident when discussing how paleontologists use these ancient remains as evidence of life from the past.
The staff meeting focused on a range of strategies for retrieval practice and hinge questions. Retrieval practice helps children to connect new learning to their existing knowledge. Hinge questions are assessment opportunities to help teachers shape the content and direction of a lesson. Mr Morey and Miss Murphy attended Team Teach training looking at de-escalation techniques and behaviour management strategies.
