Spring Term Newsletter #19
31st January 2025
Dear Parents and Carers,
It was lovely to see so many positive faces coming back into school on Tuesday afternoon. Year 2 had explored the Natural History Museum in Tring and Year 1 had scoured the High Street identifying local landmarks. The classroom is an excellent learning space, but getting out and about is a powerful way to enrich our learning and understanding. Thank you to the staff and parent helpers who gave up their time to provide these opportunities. Councillor Mark Wilson came to visit us on Tuesday morning. We had some productive conversations about community links and he was particularly interested in discussing the great work we are doing to support SEND pupils. He will be back later this term to explore this further with Miss Murphy.
Values: This week our value has been 'kindness'. In our assembly on Monday, we considered the Aesop quote: No act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted. It has been really pleasing to see so many children considering this, particularly in the dining hall where children's manners have been excellent and they have been helpful to each other. Today, our values champions were recognised in assembly for their kindness to their peers and the wider school community. Next week, our value will be 'curiosity' and we will explore the metaphor: curiosity is the wick in the candle of learning.
Votes for Schools: This week, we explored 'How do we respect someone’s privacy?' (KS1) 'Should we be worried about drone use?' (KS2). The discussions about drones lead to wider considerations about the impact (good and bad) of technology on our everyday lives. Next week, the class debate takes a reflective topic: 'Does learning about your emotions help you to feel better?'
Parent Governors: Thank you to the four parents who put themselves forward for the positions and to all the parents who voted. I can confirm that Lawrence Brown and Charlotte Ward have been elected to the new governing body which will meet for its induction meeting on Thursday 6th February.
School Timings: A letter will be sent to all parents shortly explaining my interest in opening school earlier in the mornings. The current 'soft start' between 8.45 and 9.00 is leading to lost learning as late arrivals disrupt the start to lessons. The proposal is to bring the 'soft start' forward to 8.35 - 8.45 after the Easter holiday.
Class Expos: Later this term, we will be launching 'Class Expos' where parents are invited into school to explore the curriculum with their children. These will take place in classrooms throughout March and the children will be your guides touring you around all that they have achieved this term. Dates and timings for the first Expos can be found below in the 'Upcoming Dates...' section.
This weekend we say goodbye to (what feels like a very long) January. The forecast suggests Sunday is a sunny day so be sure to get out and about - Cassiobury Park is just on our doorstep. Have a great weekend!
Best wishes,
Mr. Matt Morey - Headteacher

Attendance this week is 95.8%. It is great to see us over the 95% benchmark. Learning cannot take place if children are not in school; it is vital that all children are here every day. Congratulations to Kampala for achieving an excellent attendance rate of 98.2%, and Sydney in second with 97.6%. These results highlight our collective dedication to education and growth. Let's continue this momentum and strive for even higher attendance rates across all classes in the coming months!

This week, the competition for house points has been up and down, day by day. Well done to Curie who have created a small lead at the top. Can Alhazen leap-frog back to the summit next week? Children’s attitude to learning has been recognised through the collection of Dojo points, which are then totalled as house points across the school. Every child continues to show their commitment to being Ready, Respectful and Resilient, earning points for their house.
Here’s how the points stand:
1st: Curie with 1777 points (+433 from last week)
2nd: Alhazen with 1765 points (+423 from last week)
3rd: Sharman with 1675 points (+444 from last week)
4th: Carver with 1620 points (+412 from last week)
Let’s keep up the great work and continue to support each other as we aim for the top!
Class News
Reception have had a busy week innovating the story of The Sleepy Bumblebee. It has been great to see their ideas and suggestions in their own story maps. In maths, we have been deepening our understanding of the numbers 6, 7 & 8. We have enjoyed learning about Chinese New Year and have participated in activities around the celebration. This week in topic we have looked at the moon and watched a clip of the first ever moon landing.
This week in Geography, our Year 1 students embarked on an exciting walk around Watford to explore the human features of our local area. They identified buildings, shops, roads, parks, and other man-made structures. The children were thrilled to spot familiar landmarks, enthusiastically pointing out places they visit with their families. This hands-on experience helped them develop a deeper understanding of their surroundings and how people shape the environment around them. It was a wonderful way to bring their Geography lessons to life!
Following in the footsteps of Walter Rothschild - the zoologist and the founder of Natural History Museum in Tring - Year 2 were able to explore the greatest passion of his life. Nearly 5000 specimens of animals once owned privately is now part of the significant British collection located in the beautiful Tring park. Children were fascinated to see up close the extraordinary animals and they learned so much about animal classifications at the workshop. Amazing experience and a lovely day out with our wonderful young learners!
Year 3 have been making lanterns to celebrate Lunar New Year (also known as Chinese New Year). They found out how it is celebrated and asked thoughtful questions during their phase assembly.
This week in English, we focused on short burst writing, with an emphasis on creating vivid setting descriptions. In Maths, we have been refining our skills in dividing 2-digit and 3-digit numbers using a variety of strategies. In Science, we explored how water changes into different states through hands-on experiments, observing how heat and cold affect its transformation. To wrap up the week, we held a Parent Workshop on the multiplication check, and we’d like to extend a big thank you to all the parents who attended.
In Year 5 this week the children have been learning about asexual reproduction in plants. They were fascinated by how the examples of plants that they were studying could produce exact clones of themselves and they carried out some research to find out more about the different ways that this can happen.
This week in science, Year 6 pupils explored how organisms adapt to survive in hot and cold climates. They investigated physical and behavioural adaptations, from the thick fur of polar bears to how the peppered moth has changed over time. Through discussions and activities, students deepen their understanding of how living things thrive in extreme environments, connecting these adaptations to broader ecological concepts.
This week we revamped the structure of our medium term planning for the curriculum. Teachers worked with their year group partner to map out the lesson content for the second half of the spring term. Teachers also shared examples of lessons they have taught using our new lesson sequence introduced at the start of the term.
Hope you’ve all been keeping warm and dry!
