Spring Term Newsletter #18
24th January 2025
Dear Parents and Carers,
It has been a week of productive learning and 'business as usual' in school this week. We have had several visitors who have all remarked on the calm and purposeful learning environments. They have also been impressed by some of our Learning Ambassadors who greeted them at the classroom door to explain about the learning taking place. This week has seen wider pupil voice across school: on Tuesday, Mr Sanderson took the Learner Voice Council members to De Havilland Primary School where they refined their mission for this year, working with children from the five other primary schools in our Trust; throughout the week, the Junior Leadership Team have been meeting the classes they represent to get their ideas for learning environments and World Book Day.
Values: This week our value has been 'resilience'. In our values assembly on Monday, we talked about the strategies we can use to help us build resilience - stay positive, ask for help, keep trying - and how we can apply these to so many different aspects of life in school. Today, our values champions were recognised in assembly for their resilient approach to learning and also some of the relationships they are building with their peers. Next week, our value will be 'kindess' and how the little acts of kindness can build a better culture for us all.
Votes for Schools: This week, we explored 'Is it easy to save your pennies?' with a focus on how we might use money to meet our needs and wants. There was some lively discussions about the challenges of saving against the impulse to spend! The children also discussed how to set up a bank account and where to go for financial advise. Next week, the topic switches to privacy: How do we respect someone’s privacy? (KS1) Should we be worried about drone use? (KS2).
Staffing Update: I realised this week that the letter to accompany the last newsletter of the autumn term did not get sent and so there are some staffing changes to share with you:
Mrs Helen Ansell joined the team in January as our new Assistant Headteacher. She is developing the quality of teaching and learning across the school, with a focus on reading, and will also be teaching in Year 5
Mr Richard Lees-Powell joins us to teach Year 6 New York for the remainder of the academic year
Mr Matt Bristow has been appointed as the interim Phase Leader while Mrs de Garis is on maternity leave. He will continue to teach Year 6 Kingston and help the wider Key Stage Two team
Mrs Bethany de Garis is on maternity leave after giving birth to her son over the Christmas break. We look forward to hearing from her soon and wish her well as she adapts to family life
Ms Ann Bergman has left the office team. We thank her for her hard work and dedication to the school and wish her well for the future
Mrs Sara Kacina has left the school in order to take up a new challenge. We wish her well in her future endeavours and thank her for all that she has done and contributed to the school in her time with us
Lastly, Kerry Bridgewater has shared her resignation with me this week as she moves to take on a new position in a secondary school. She will be with us until February half term. Mrs Bridgewater has been a huge part of Lanchester's journey over the last ten years and will be greatly missed. In my brief time working with her, she has been a huge support to me and has done so many things to make sure the school runs smoothly.
Fortunately, we missed the worst of Storm Eowyn and it looks like we may benefit from the calm after the storm with a clear and sunny day on Saturday. I encourage you to get outside and make the most of the sunshine after a somewhat gloomy January, weatherwise. Have a great weekend.
Best wishes,
Mr. Matt Morey - Headteacher

Times Table Rockstars
TTRs enables all children to develop their knowledge of multiplication through practice and competition. Encourage your child to log in this weekend and make their screen time productive time. How many questions can they answer in 60 seconds?
Attendance this week is 94.1%. Learning cannot take place if children are not in school; it is vital that all children are here every day. Congratulations to Kampala for achieving an excellent attendance rate of 98.8%, and Kampala in second with 97.6%. These results highlight our collective dedication to education and growth. Let's continue this momentum and strive for even higher attendance rates across all classes in the coming months!

This week, the competition for house points has been up and down, day by day. Well done to Curie who have reclaimed the top spot. Can Alhazen leap-frog back to the summit next week? Children’s attitude to learning has been recognised through the collection of Dojo points, which are then totalled as house points across the school. Every child continues to show their commitment to being Ready, Respectful and Resilient, earning points for their house.
Here’s how the points stand:
1st: Curie with 1344 points (+476 from last week)
2nd: Alhazen with 1342 points (+469 from last week)
3rd: Sharman with 1231 points (+405 from last week)
4th: Carver with 1208 points (+410 from last week)
Let’s keep up the great work and continue to support each other as we aim for the top!
Class News
This week, we have continued learning about bees and in particular how they make honey. We gave Miss Henney instructions on how to make a honey sandwich and then had a go at making our own honey sandwiches! In maths, we have started looking at weight and capacity. The children have demonstrated a good understanding of heavy and light by becoming human weighing scales.
This week in Geography, Year 1 have been developing their map-reading skills. They have been learning how to interpret map symbols using a key and applied this knowledge to identify famous London landmarks.
'Beautiful UK Coastlines' are this term’s Geography focus for Year 2. On Wednesday, children were learning about 4 cardinal points of the compass and how to use it to find directions from one coastal town to another. We also made our very own compasses!
In this week's computing lesson, year 3 were learning about how branching databases are used to organise information. They worked collaboratively to create a branching database using pictures and 'Yes/No' questions. Next week, they will be developing their skills by creating a branching database online.
This week, Year 4 has been mastering the art of multiplying 2- and 3-digit numbers by a 1-digit number. We’ve been exploring different strategies to make these calculations more efficient. We also went on a trip to the local Synagogue as part of our Religious Education topic. We had the chance to explore the Synagogue, ask questions, and learn about its significance. It was a fantastic experience that helped deepen our understanding of different cultures and traditions.
The children have been learning about shading techniques in preparation for their art project this term which involves them evaluating their landscape art from last term to see how they can improve their work using new techniques. In writing, they have been undertaking various planning activities to ensure they have a clear idea on how they can build their own action stories.
As part of their topic on global responsibility and care, Year 6 have been exploring the causes of climate change. Through reading and research they have summarised the causes and impact. This topic has also linked to art lessons where, through careful observation and blending skills, they explored light, shadow, and texture to bring their drawings to life. This activity combined technical precision with creativity, encouraging students to express their artistic vision.
The teaching team used the time this week to meet with parents to discuss Personal Learning Plans. The SLT took the opportunity to look further ahead, developing curriculum overviews and mapping future dates in the school diary, which will be shared with parents shortly.
We’ve been doing lots of planning and have some exciting events coming up this term. As ever, we’d love your help and support so please do get in touch if you'd like to get involved.
