Spring Term Newsletter #27
4th April 2025
Dear Parents and Carers,
As we reach the end of a wonderful spring term, we would like to take a moment to celebrate all of the amazing achievements, hard work and fun the children have experienced over the last few months. It has been a busy term packed with learning opportunities, special events and memorable moments. Some key highlights for me have been: the positive response from children, parents and staff about the 'Class Expos'; the range of reading activities explored during World Book Day; the breadth of visits we have undertaken across school. The holidays also provide a moment to look ahead at what is coming up in the summer term. We have more trips lined up, sports day, SATS for Year 6, Empathy Week and a range of celebrations culminating in LanchestFest in July. Lots to look forward to!
Values: This week we explored 'courage' and the values champions were celebrated in assembly for displaying courage in a range of ways linked to learning and relationships. Next term, we are going to focus solely on 'respect' until half term, exploring what this means in different contexts.
Votes for Schools: This week we considered 'Do role models help you? (KS1) and 'Are role models important to you?' (KS2). There was lots of conversations around celebrity role models, but also those closer to home including parents and siblings.
Arbor: At Lanchester we use a platform called Arbor to manage the administration of the school. They have a parent app that can provide access to information and be used for a range of functions, including booking parents' evenings. We will launch this after the Easter break with details about signing up sent to parents today.
Staffing Changes: This week we have said thank you and goodbye to Mrs Mullins and Miss Hudson who have been teaching Barcelona Class. They will be replaced by Mrs Burton and Mrs Krige when we return to school next term. We also welcome Mrs Gomes to our London Class. She is a highly experienced LSP who will bring a wealth of knowledge and skill to our Reception team.
The glorious spring sunshine looks to be continuing into next week and, coupled with the longer evenings, should provide lots of opportunities to get outside and explore. As always, there are lots of events happening locally in town and numerous restaurants where children eat free with a paying adult. However you choose to spend the next two weeks, I hope you all find time to relax and recharge ready for the summer term.
Best wishes,
Mr. Matt Morey - Headteacher

Congratulations to Alhazen who held on to claim the half termly win and leave the green ribbons on the trophy in the school entrance for another half term. Every child continues to show their commitment to being Ready, Respectful and Resilient, earning points for their house.
Here’s how the points stand:

Class News
Reception have had a wonderful end to our spring term. We have seen some fantastic writing of our five sentence story in literacy and in maths we have consolidated our learning for the term. We ended our understanding the world topic on dinosaurs by making fossils which the children thoroughly enjoyed. Have a lovely Easter break!
Year 1 have finished their exciting Moon Zoom DT unit with a fantastic rocket launch of creativity! The children began by designing their own spaceships, carefully selecting the materials they would need, and even creating a list poster to plan their builds. Using recycled materials, they then brought their designs to life, thinking like real engineers as they explored shapes, structures, and joining techniques. It was wonderful to see their imagination take flight!
Our Year 2 students discovered that whether it's exploring colourful picture books, enjoying engaging story times, or participating in fun activities, our local libraries offer endless opportunities for learning and growth. By visiting the library, children not only develop a love for books but also gain valuable skills that will stay with them for life. Take your child to the library today – a whole new world of discovery awaits!
This week, Year 3 made their very own tacos. They have worked incredibly hard this half term and were demonstrating our school values of resilience and respect throughout our 'Cook Well, Eat Well' topic. A big well done to all of Year 3 and thank you to Ms Harrison for being a fantastic sous-chef too!
Year 4 have had a fantastic term! They wrote diary entries about their trip to Cassiobury park, using the toolkit to capture their experiences. In Art, the class explored the stunning landscapes of mountains and rivers. Using the unique style of Jen Aranyi, they created beautiful, vibrant artworks. In Design and Technology, they designed and created their own food packages, showcasing their creativity and practical skills. To wrap up the week, Year 4 got creative with Easter cards, designing and making their own unique cards to celebrate the season. It’s been a week full of creativity, learning, and fun!
Year 5 enjoyed a fabulous trip to the Tring Museum of Natural Science this week. They engaged in four different activities throughout the day linking into their upcoming science unit 'Animals Including Humans'. The activities were based on investigating how the animals were adapted to survive by focussing on their teeth and other adaptations as well as this the children also completed a workshop on classification of animals as well as an animal drawing.
The Year 6 students brought their geography and DT learning full circle as they completed their recycled turtle projects - a powerful symbol of environmental awareness. The finished turtles serve as a creative reminder of our responsibility to protect marine life from pollution and climate change. The children showed great pride in their completed pieces, which combined their practical DT skills with their deepened understanding of environmental impact. A fantastic way to conclude our geography unit with these meaningful, hands-on creations.
This week we undertook some self-reflection exploring the outcomes of our staff survey and what we can do to be better. We also launched a new End of Term Report format so that staff can begin work on those. Lastly, we reviewed the PSHE and Values provision and what we intend to do next term.
At this week's parent workshop, Mr. Bristow outlined our plans for SATS Week 2025, including our school's preparation strategy and practical revision tips for home learning. Missed the workshop? Access Mr. Bristow's presentation slides by clicking here.
