Autumn Term Newsletter #8
25th October 2024
Dear Parents and Carers,
It has been great to see so many of you in school this week for parents' evening. Thank you for taking the time to engage with us and support your children's learning. Thank you too for the support and feedback shared with the teachers and myself. A lot of hard work has gone into this half term and it is great to know the impact we all have when we work together.
Book Fair: The Chorleywood Book Shop were really impressed by the interest and knowledge of books and authors on display from parents and pupils alike. Over the two parents' evenings, you invested £774 in books for the children. The school receives 10% commission which we can now invest in the reading stock in school. They have also added us to their author visits list and we will wait to hear who will come and visit us. Watch this space!
Library: On the theme of books, the KS2 library relocation and revamp is nearly complete! Many thanks to Nick Hunt and Jon Brown, from our team, who helped with the move and a special mention to Clare Masini for all the excellent work she has done organising the stock. During the move, some of the damaged stock has been removed. As a result, we are running low on copies of popular books such as: Harry Potter, Tom Gates, Wimpy Kid, Captain Underpants. If you have good condition copies that are no longer being read, please donate them to our library.
Values: As we reach the end of the half term, our weekly value has been reflection, encouraging us to think back and remember the progress we have made. On a personal level, my own learning journey is a rapid one and it has been beneficial to stop and reflect. I have been really impressed with the way we have embraced our school values so quickly, recognising success through house points and developing a shared language. The next step for me and the team is to polish our reading provision and I am excited by some of the changes and training we have coming up next half term. When we come back to school, our weekly value will be ready, as we settle back into the routines.
Votes for Schools: We are famous! Each week classes submit their votes and comments about the weekly question and the feedback from Rio class was shared on the V4S slides this week. Over 65,000 children have read the views of Rio class! A really powerful example of the importance of being heard and having a voice. This week the big question asked 'Is it easy to choose a leader?' (Y1-Y2) and 'Should we choose our leaders based on their personality?' (Y3-Y6). Interestingly, 65% of children agreed.
Half-Term: We are fortunate to live in a town that has a lot of opportunities for children and families, particularly during the school holidays. Atria Watford are hosting daily free workshops, the annual fireworks display is happening in Cassiobury Park on Sat 2nd November, and Market Lates is taking place at Watford Market. Many of the restaurants in town also have free kids meals with a paying adult. Some options include: ASDA, Ask, Bill's, Morrisons, Pizza Hut, Tesco, TGI Fridays and Yo Sushi.
I hope you all enjoy a relaxing half-term break and I look forward to seeing you all back ready and refreshed on Monday 4th November.
Best wishes,
Mr Matt Morey - Headteacher

Class News
This week in Reception
This week in reception we have been looking at the story of The Elves and the Shoemaker. The children were surprised to find lots of shoes hidden in the classroom. We have also enjoyed learning about the Hindu festival of Diwali.
This week in Year 1
This week in RE to finish our unit on Harvest festival we worked together to make an apple crumble using the fruit from the earth. We also enjoyed making and decorating Diwali decorations this afternoon.
This week in Year 2
Year 2 loves working with physical objects in Maths. This week we have been using counters to count in 2s and to write the correct numbers along our number snakes. Children then continued to chant in 2s and all the way to the highest number they managed to go up to in their lines.
This week in Year 3
Year 3 had a fantastic day consolidating their learning about the Stone Age. They took part in drama, storytelling, cave inspired art and were able to show our special visitor how curious they were by asking some brilliant questions!
This week in Year 4
This week Year 4 produced some fantastic stories about their own characters that they created, we brought them to life by using exciting vocabulary. We have also been practising our times tables everyday with Times Tables Rockstars and have improved so much already. To end the week, we spoke about the upcoming festival of Diwali and made some paper diyas.
This week in Year 5
Year 5 went into London to explore the London Science Museum. Whilst we were there we were able to engage with fascinating exhibitions linked to our learning about Earth and Space. In class this week, Year 5 created some wonderful presentations on the Shang dynasty whilst also working in groups to enhance their arithmetic skills by solving word based problems.
This week in Year 6
The Year 6 team are so proud of the hard work and progress made by our Year 6 children this half term. It was a privilege to take them to the Lincolnsfield Children's Centre this week for a World War 2 experience day. We loved hearing first hand stories from one of the centre leaders about his time as an evacuee during the Blitz as well as stepping back in time to a 1940's classroom, house and victory garden.
This week in Staff Meetings
With two late evenings talking to parents, there was no staff meeting this week. Instead, we have been preparing the training for next half term. We will continue our learning journey about memorable teaching and focus on the details in some subject areas such as phonics and reading skills lessons.
