Autumn Term Newsletter #5

4th October 2024

Dear Parents and Carers,

I have been busy continuing my own learning journey this week, spending lots of time observing phonics and early reading sessions in Key Stage One. The children all demonstrated a thirst for knowledge using 'Fred Talk' and 'Fred Fingers' to sound out and spell new words. It was great to see a consistent approach across the classes.

Values: Our weekly value has been empathy and we considered what it might be like to walk a mile in someone elses shoes during our assembly on Monday. This value has been visible throughout the school and demonstrated by our values champions who were all recognised today for showing empathy towards their peers. Our values work ended with our Harvest Collection (see below) for those in our community who we can help. The highlight of the assembly was the fantastic singing of 'Cauliflowers Fluffy' and 'Harvest Samba'. The children sang beautifully and I will think about future events and how we can share this wonderful talent with you all. A big thank you to everyone who contributed to the collection. My Year 5 volunteers estimated there must be over 700 items in total - a wonderful achievement. Thank you.

Votes for Schools: Miss Murphy was in school to lead the assembly this week and introduce the question: Do we know how to appreciate other people's heritage? (7-11) & Can you learn from other people's life stories? (5-7). Next week, we will split the question differently as Years 5 & 6 tackle a more mature topic: Should there be stricter rules on knife crime? This will be followed up next week by a classroom visit from the police. The other year groups will be considering: Do you know how to be safe on your streets?

Junior Leadership Team & House Captains: This week we have appointed Year 6 children to become the first Junior Leadership Team at Lanchester Primary School. They will be meeting with me next week to work out how best to support the younger pupils. We also have House Captains to organise events and promote collaboration through the school. Dojo points = house points. See the new tab below for the points table.

Coming Up: Next week, there is an opportunity to hear from myself and Aaron Wansford (Director of Education) about the steps we have taken so far and the strategic plans for the school going forward. We will be hosting the session twice, at 2.30pm and 6.30pm, on Thursday 10th October. To confirm your attendance please click here.

Drop Off & Pick Up: Please make every effort to walk to school or park and walk part of the way. The school site is not designed with drivers in mind and the congestion in the drop off zone is problematic. If you must drive, please be respectful of other road users and pedestrians. Thank you for your cooperation.

October is Black History Month. Watford Council have a range of activities and events lined up across the month. Click here to see what's on. Whatever you choose to do, be sure to relax, unwind and have fun.

Have a great weekend,

Class News

This week in Reception

This week, we have been looking at the story of The Three Little Pigs. We made houses out of straw, sticks and bricks to test which ones were easier to blow down, like the Big Bad Wolf. In maths, we have started looking at patterns. We started off with actions in a pattern then moved on to creating repeating patterns with concrete resources.

This week in Year 1

Year one, this week, have been putting their science knowledge of everyday materials to the test by making and sailing boats at Cassiobury Park.

This week in Year 2

This week in Science, Year 2 were finally able to put their collected data and theory knowledge to the test. Carefully recreating local microhabitats, each class has worked in small groups to make Bug Hotels for our playground. Children very much enjoyed making cosy homes for our friendly insects!

This week in Year 3

This week, Year 3 explored how artists use colour to create different effects on the viewer. They learnt about colour theory, where certain colours are grouped into categories, such as primary colours, complimentary colours and analogous colours.

This week in Year 4

This week year 4 have continued to focus on their model text of The Wild girl through roleplay. We even tried to hot seat the main characters. We also continued our learning on Anglo Saxons focusing on their settlements and lifestyle.

This week in Year 5

The children have enjoyed becoming shop owners deciding what items to sell and at what price to their peers. The children also took a deeper dive into the history of the Shang Dynasty looking in detail at how historical sources are created and why they are important evidence of past civilisations. The children have begun their landscape artwork by experimenting with tint, tones and shades of different colours.

This week in Year 6

This week, Year 6 has been exploring a variety of different curriculum areas. In their English, they have been using semicolons and colons to add detail. Additionally, in their Science, they have classified insects and plants. Finally, in their history they have explored the damaging effects of the Blitz and what Britain did to mitigate the damages.

This week in Staff Meetings

The teaching team continued their memorable teaching training exploring the concept 'memory is the residue of thought'. We explored the importance of task selection to ensure children interact with new information and relate it to their existing knowledge. We also checked the quality of phonics and reading skills pupil books.

Halloween bake sale

We’re looking for all budding bakers to help bake some tasty treats for our Halloween bake sale on Friday 25th October. If baking isn’t really your thing, shop bought donations are also very gratefully received!

Please do bring your donations in, with a list of ingredients, and leave them in the glass foyer on the Friday morning. We’ll be selling immediately after school until 4:30pm.

Please do support us by coming along and buying some of the goodies we’ll have for sale.

Non-uniform day

We’ll also be holding a non-uniform day on the last day of term. Please come in dressed in your own clothes for a £1 donation.

Asda Cashpot

There are only 57 days left for us to raise as much as we can. We’ve currently got £96 in the pot but would love to get even more free money for school.

Even if you don’t shop at Asda, you can add more to the pot simply by downloading the Asda rewards app and choosing Lanchester Primary School. Everyone that adds us means an extra £1 in the pot. Even better if you shop at Asda as we’ll get a percentage of your shop donated directly to us.

Please contact us if you’re not sure what to do.
