Autumn Term Newsletter #13
6th December 2024
Dear Parents and Carers,
It has been a week of adventures as we have been out and about for a range of reasons. Year 6 visited a local church on Wednesday to support their RE lessons and Year 1 were at Whipsnade Zoo researching African animals for their writing. I was busy building relationships with others schools, attending the local headteacher forum on Wednesday and the Danes Trust leadership forum yesterday. Lastly, some of the children have been off spreading some festive cheer in the community. Both Rio and Cusco, along with a Year 4 choir, visited local care homes to sing carols and read poems to elderly residents. Collaboration and community are important to our school culture and it has been valuable to strengthen relationships this week.
Values: This week our value has been 'collaboration' and we have been busy living it throughout the local area, as described above. Next week, we explore the importance of 'perseverance' and the determination to keep going (even when you are tired nearing the end of a long term!).
Votes for Schools: This week, we explored the question 'Do assumptions do more harm than good?' I dropped in to see how Barcelona tackled this topic and was impressed with the thoughtful answers as the children explored the meaning of the word assumption. Next week, our topic takes a digital direction as we consider 'Do emojis help you to communicate?'
Christmas at Lanchester: The season is upon us and so are the festive activities. The children's Christmas lunch is on Wednesday and we are off to the pantomime in our Christmas jumpers on Thursday. The final week of term sees different classes sharing a selection of carols with you at the end of the school day. See the 'Upcoming Dates...' section below.
I am sure I will see many of you at the Christmas Fair on Saturday supporting the great work the Friends of Lanchester have put in to support the community. Have a great weekend.
Best wishes,
Mr. Matt Morey - Headteacher

This week, the competition for house points has been as exciting as ever! Children’s attitude to learning has been recognised through the collection of Dojo points, which are then totalled as house points across the school. Every child continues to show their commitment to being Ready, Respectful and Resilient, earning points for their house.
Carver have held on to the top spot again this week but the gap is closing. Congratulations to Curie who scored the most points this week and have closed the gap! The race is tight, and it’s all to play for as we head into next week!

Class News
This week has been all about Penguin Problems! We read The Penguin with Rainbow Hair and Tango Makes Three to inspire our learning. We made penguin art, explored the life cycle of penguins and even managed to save some from ice! The children used a range of tools to free the penguins.
Year 1 enjoyed their day at the zoo, exploring African animals supporting their writing in literacy for our topic "Amazing Antelope. Thank you to all the parents who helped us to enjoy the day.
This week in DT, Year 2 had a fantastic time making chocolate chip cookies! The children worked together brilliantly, following a recipe step by step and using a weighing scale to measure the ingredients. It was a wonderful opportunity to practice teamwork, follow instructions carefully, and see how their efforts came together to create a delicious treat.
This week in Art, Year 3 painted their prehistoric clay pots in the style of the Stone Age and Bronze Age. The children learnt that after the Stone Age Period, people improved the design of pots by using stronger materials to craft from, such as bronze.
Year 4 have created lots of great vocabulary and phrases in preparation for their independent recount writing. In History, we have continued to learn about why Vikings invaded Britain. We were all very impressed with the fantastic homework pieces that we were given including longships and models of the digestive system! We ended the week with some of our children going to a local care home for Christmas carolling. They all enjoyed their fantastic singing and invited us to come back soon!
This week, Year 5 ventured out to spread some Christmas joy to our community. On Tuesday, Rio de Janeiro class headed to Brunswick Court Care home to sing Christmas Carols to the residents, with Cusco spreading the same joy and happiness to the residents of Montrose Care Home. The residents, staff and students all had a wonderful time celebrating the festive season.
This week, Year 6 visited our local church to explore how its space and sacred items help Christians worship. The children were fascinated to learn about the significance of the altar, pulpit, and stained-glass windows in Christian practices. A highlight was one of our pupils showing resilience and readiness by beautifully playing the organ, demonstrating her piano skills to an audience of classmates and church staff. The visit was a wonderful opportunity for the children to deepen their understanding of faith.
In our meeting this week, the team compiled the list of interventions that we are equipped to deliver to support pupils with additional needs. A few new ideas have been added and will become part of our provision from January. We also looked at a new lesson planning template to incorporate more of our training about memorable teaching ensuring all our lessons are engaging.
