Spring Term Newsletter #24
14th March 2025
Dear Parents and Carers,
It has been business as usual this week after the excitement of World Book Day with lots of engaging learning taking place across the curriculum. It has been exciting to see, smell and taste a range of foods coming from our Science Room - next door to my office - with Year 3 and Year 5 busy in the kitchen. It is so important that children develop a health relationship with food and, where possible, I encourage you all to get your children engaged at home with meal times and baking. This week has also seen the beginning of our assessment window as we check-in on the progress of the children and ensure we have the most up to date information to share with you at the upcoming parents' evenings.
Parents' Evenings: Links to booking forms on Google Calendar have been released this week. Please ensure that you book one ten minute appointment per child with each teacher. There are not enough slots for families to book multiple times and additional slots will be deleted. If you need assistance, please come and speak to the office team.
Values: This week we explored 'creativity' and how it can lead to amazing and important discoveries and inventions. Our values champions were celebrated in assembly for their creativity in their writing, science planning and art work. Next week, our value is 'ambition' and we consider the words of Salvadore Dali - 'Intelligence without ambition is a bird without wings.'
Votes for Schools: This week we considered 'Would you go to a local youth club?' (KS1) and 'Would you use a local youth space?' (KS2). The children considered the community spaces locally that are available to them such as the library, the leisure centre and youth groups such as Beavers and Rainbows. Next week, we will be exploring 'Should people always use their real name online?' (KS1) and 'Should people be allowed to be anonymous online?' (KS2).
Class Expos: Thank you to those of you who have shared your views on the class expos we have hosted so far. Next week Year 5 (Thursday at 2.45), Year 2 and Year 6 (both on Friday at 2.45) will be sharing their learning with you all. The Reception Expo will be re-arranged shortly.
I hope you all enjoy a relaxing weekend with friends and family.
Best wishes,
Mr. Matt Morey - Headteacher

Attendance this week is 94.8%. Once again, we are just short of the 95% benchmark. Learning cannot take place if children are not in school; it is vital that all children are here every day. Congratulations to Cairo for achieving an excellent attendance rate of 99.4%, and New York in second with 99.2%. These results highlight our collective dedication to education and growth. Let's continue this momentum and strive for even higher attendance rates across all classes in the coming months!
Class Attendance Summary:

2. Beijing 99.1%

All change again this week as the race to the top picks up pace. Congratulations to Alhazen who are top with 1721 points, collecting an enormous 821 points in one week! Children’s attitude to learning has been recognised through the collection of Dojo points, which are then totalled as house points across the school. Every child continues to show their commitment to being Ready, Respectful and Resilient, earning points for their house.
Here’s how the points stand:
1st: Alhazen with 1721 points (+821 points this week)
2nd: Curie with 1667 points (+738 points this week)

Class News
This week in reception the children have demonstrated great recall skills and have been able to orally retell our class story of Jack and the Beanstalk by using the story map. In maths, we have looked at the numbers 9 and 10, one more and one less than numbers within 10. We have looked at healthy eating in PSHE, where the children have shown a deep understanding of how healthy and unhealthy food affects our bodies.
This week in Geography, Year 1 explored the incredible work of artist Stephen Wiltshire, who is famous for his detailed cityscape drawings. Inspired by his artwork, the children had a go at drawing their own cityscapes of London, focusing on landmarks like Big Ben. They were fascinated by the details and can’t wait to continue sketching more famous landmarks they have been learning about!
Year 2 conducted another experiment in the Science lesson today. To support our understanding of the importance of oral hygiene and how our teeth are affected by acid in the food we consume, we immersed 4 eggs into four different liquids: orange juice, vinegar, coke and pure water. We recorded our predictions of what is going to happen to each of the eggshells and we will make a final observation next week. We cannot wait to see the results!
This week, Year 3 made their very first pretzels in D&T. Next week, we will be evaluating and discussing how we could improve its taste and texture. Making pretzels also linked well to our topic on Christianity. Did you know that the shape of a pretzel is significant because it resembles someone crossing their arms in prayer?
This week in Year 4 Science, students had an exciting hands-on experience learning about electrical circuits! They identified key circuit components like batteries, wires, and bulbs, and then worked together to build their very own circuits. It was a great opportunity for them to apply their knowledge and see how electricity flows! The children also put their creativity to work, drawing and labelling their circuits in detail.
This week in Year 5 the children have been applying their knowledge to understand why some places in the world are able to grow citrus fruits and others aren't. In this week's lesson the children were off to California to learn how citrus fruits can grow in what is typically a desert climate. They studied information closely and produced a fact file on the reasons why specific places in California can grow these fruits.
Resilience shone through in our DT lessons this week as Year 6 tackled the challenging task of creating turtles from recycled materials. The children persevered while constructing the base structures using chicken wire - a tricky material that required careful handling and problem-solving skills. Despite some initial struggles, our determined students showed true grit and creativity in bringing their designs to life.
The staff reviewed our teaching structure and aligned it to our core principles behind memorable teaching. We also continued to map out the provision and enrichment opportunities lined up for the summer term.
