Spring Term Newsletter #20
7th February 2025
Dear Parents and Carers,
Children's Mental Health Week has been visible across school this week through assemblies, class discussions and lesson tasks. Children have explored a range of strategies to help boost their wellbeing such as 'brain foods' (did you know kiwis contain omega-3?), the importance of physical activity and the power of sleep. We also recognised the importance of celebrating the wins, even if they are small. Self-talk and a positive mindset are so powerful and it is great if we can begin to develop these skills in the children.
Values: This week our value has been 'curiosity' and we have used it to explore Children's Mental Health Week. In assembly on Monday, we introduced the question 'Do we know how to keep our brain healthy?' understanding that physical health directly impacts on our mental wellbeing. Next week, we will be exploring 'reflection'. Self-reflection is the school of wisdom.
Votes for Schools: Continuing the mental health theme, we explored 'Does learning about your emotions help you to feel better?' There were some insightful and mature discussions throughout school with considerations given to how well we recognise our emotions and if we have the language to describe them to others. Next week, in conjunction with Safer Internet Day, the big question will be: 'Is it easy to know who to trust online?'
Inclusion Coffee Morning: We're hosting a coffee morning to network and share support ideas for families with SEN children. More information can be found on the flyer below.
Junior Leadership Team (JLT): The JLT have been back in action this week. The whole team met me on Tuesday to feedback ideas from the other classes about the classroom environments and how we might explore World Book Day. The V4S ambassadors also represented the school in a student webinar where they met representatives from Place2Be and explored the theme: know yourself; grow yourself.
School Timings: Thank you to those of you who have shared your views as part of the consultation. The online response form will remain open for a couple of weeks; the more views we have the more informed our decision-making will be.
Governors: It was great to see the newly formed School Board at their induction meeting last night. We are fortunate to have a knowledgeable team with a diverse range of skills ready to support us on our improvement journey. Their first official meeting will be on Monday 24th February.
Six Heads is Better Than One: On Wednesday morning, the headteachers of the other primary schools in the Trust came to visit us at Lanchester. They toured the school, meeting children and discussing ways we can work together to improve outcomes. Many of them commented on the calm and purposeful learning environment throughout the school.
I hope you all enjoy a relaxing weekend.
Best wishes,
Mr. Matt Morey - Headteacher

Congratulations to Delhi for achieving an excellent attendance rate of 98.9%, and Rome in second with 97.5%. These results highlight our collective dedication to education and growth. Let's continue this momentum and strive for even higher attendance rates across all classes in the coming months!

This week, we passed the 8,000 points total across the houses. That is a lot of excellent choices and hard work across the school. Well done to Curie who have pulled away at the top. Alhazen look to be safe in second spot with one week to go until half term. Children’s attitude to learning has been recognised through the collection of Dojo points, which are then totalled as house points across the school. Every child continues to show their commitment to being Ready, Respectful and Resilient, earning points for their house.
Here’s how the points stand:
1st: Curie with 2233 points (+456 from last week)
2nd: Alhazen with 2194 points (+429 from last week)
3rd: Sharman with 2091 points (+416 from last week)

Let’s keep up the great work and continue to support each other as we aim for the top!
Class News
This week in reception we have been busy writing our innovated story of ‘The Sleepy Bumblebee’. The children chose to change the main character to a spider. The children have produced some fantastic writing which we are very proud of! In maths we have been looking at pairs and doubles. We have continued to look into space for our UTW topic of’Starry night’ where the children have explored the different planets in space, including the moon.
This week, Year 1 had an exciting time investigating their sense of touch! Through a series of fun and interactive challenges, the children explored different textures, shapes, and materials—without using their eyes! Using blindfolds, they carefully felt a variety of objects, describing how they felt and making predictions about what they might be. The children were full of curiosity and enthusiasm, and it was wonderful to see them using their descriptive language and scientific thinking skills. Well done, Year 1!
This week, Year 2 tackled an independent writing task where they created their very own fiction stories, with a special focus on character description. Each child worked incredibly hard to bring their characters to life, using vivid details to describe their appearance, personality, and actions. We are incredibly proud of their efforts as young storytellers!
Year 3 have been honing their story writing skills this week with their own version of a characterisation story. They have identified writerly tools to describe a character through a narrative, such as using dialogue to express thoughts and feelings, description of their actions and how a character may transform by the end of the story (e.g learns a valuable lesson).
In English, we’ve been working on enhancing our setting descriptions for ‘The Tunnel’ by using our toolkit to make our writing more vivid and engaging. In Maths, we’ve been diving into the concept of perimeter. We had a great time measuring the perimeter of various 2D shapes, which really helped us understand how to calculate the total length around objects. To top it all off, we celebrated Number Day with a variety of fun activities.
This week in year 5 the children have enjoyed designing and creating their own action stories to finish our working unit on writing action tales. The children have also enjoyed partaking in some activities for NSPCC Number Day involving theme designing and creating their own maths board games.
Year 6 had a fantastic visit to the local mosque, enriching their RE learning and deepening their understanding of different cultures and beliefs. The children were warmly welcomed and had the opportunity to explore the mosque’s features, learn about daily prayers, and ask thoughtful questions. This experience helped them reflect on the importance of respect for different faiths & traditions. A big thank you to the mosque for their hospitality!
The planning for next term continued in our meeting this week with a focus on our writing topics leading up to Easter. We also discussed the range of activities that will be available in the week of World Book Day.
