Spring Term Newsletter #17
23rd January 2026
Dear Parents and Carers,
There have been some excellent opportunities for connection and enrichment in school this week. The football team competed in another tournament hosted by Watford FC and finished second in their group. The Learner Voice Council met for the first time enabling a selection of our pupils to engage with a Trust-wide project this term. We also welcomed students from Watford Girls Grammar School in for their work shadowing experience - many were former pupils of the school and wonderful role models for the classes they supported. Lastly, Year 4 walked to the local synagogue to gain first-hand experience of a place of worship.
Values: 'Big results require big ambitions' was the inspiration in assembly on Monday and we explored the need for a vision, hard work and the bravery to fail. We also explored the Power of Yet as we aim for our goals. I can't do that...yet! Naturally, lots of conversations have turned to what we might be when we are older. I am pleased to say there were a few aiming to be teachers among a range of options from rapper to chemical engineer! Next week, our value is kindness and we consider the words of Maya Angelou - 'People will never forget how you made them feel.'
Votes for Schools: Is tackling a topical issue next week as we consider 'Should there be a social media ban for under-16s?' Australia has recently implemented a ban and the UK government is currently consulting on the issue. It will be fascinating to get the responses from the children and I wonder what parents think too. Feel free to share your views with me on the gate in the mornings.
Maths Immersion: On Thursday 5th February, we would like to invite you into school to join a morning of maths. Head into school with your children to start the day the mathematical way! Classes will be hosting maths tasks from 8.45 until 9.30. Mr Bristow will then talk to parents about the way we deliver maths and give you all a sample of a typical maths lesson at Lanchester. The following day (Fri 6th Feb) is NSPCC Number Day with lots of unusual and engaging maths challenges happening across school. Children can wear their own clothes, with a mathematical theme, for a £1 donation to the NSPCC.
There is an excellent opportunity to get up and out on Saturday and Sunday mornings as Cassiobury Park hosts weekly parkruns at 9am. Saturday is 5km and Sunday is 2km. It is free to join in and you can track your time if you register. Click the links for more info.
Best wishes,
Mr. Matt Morey - Headteacher

Attendance this week has been a steady 94.3%. Excellent attendance is vital for successful learning. Our curriculum is sequenced and builds knowledge cumulatively, so any absence can hinder their learning journey. Be sure to get your child into school every day. We will be sending letters to families with poor attendance asking if there is anything we can do to support your child and improve their attendance. Congratulations to Colombo who retain the top spot with an excellent 99.5%

Class News
This week in reception we have been learning all about bees to deepen the understanding for our new Talk for Writing text - The Sleepy Bumblebee. The children have been able to label parts of a bee and recall facts about bees and how they make honey. The children have been able to showcase their knowledge of bees through art and craft activities during child initiated learning. We have been working on orally retelling the story using our class story map and the children have done a great job of remembering each part of the story. They are buzzing about this half term's literacy focus.
This week in History, the children have been learning about the Great Fire of London. They found out how the fire started in a bakery on Pudding Lane and explored why it spread so quickly. We talked about what houses were made from in the past, how close together they were and how the windy weather helped the fire grow. The children shared thoughtful ideas, asked brilliant questions and enjoyed comparing life in London then and now.
This week in Year 2/3, the children have been enjoying creative learning in Art and Music. In Art, they explored the work of L.S. Lowry, a famous artist known for his industrial scenes, focused on his painting 'Going to Work'. They carefully drew individual figures and groups, paying attention to shapes, forms, and details, and enjoyed bringing Lowry’s bustling scenes to life. In Music, Tokyo and Jakarta classes had a fantastic time with djembe drumming, learning bass and rim notes and experimenting with different rhythms together. The children showed great enthusiasm, creativity, and engagement throughout these lessons.
It has been another great week in Year 4! In English, the children dived into the text "The Tunnel" and used their best persuasive techniques to write letters to Jack, urging him not to step into the darkness. Our Geography lessons took us around the world as we explored the features of various climate zones, while Science was a highlight of the week; the children worked in "expert" groups to master specific tasks before teaching their findings to their peers. To round it all off, we had a fantastic visit to the Synagogue, where the children showed great respect while seeing the traditions and features of a Jewish place of worship come to life.
This week, our Year 5 classrooms were transformed into bustling research labs as the children embarked on a captivating scientific investigation. The children navigated a range of sources to discover how these two species undergo their transformations. They then took their information on to make comparisons between the two life cycles.
This week Year 6 have showcased their skills as well as their resilience on their assessments. In Maths in particular they have been working hard to strengthen their fluency. Pupils have practised the four operations regularly, building confidence and accuracy in both written and mental methods. It has been fantastic to see their progress, resilience, and positive attitudes towards challenge. These skills will be vital as they continue to prepare for their end of KS2 SATs.
This week we deepened our understanding of generative learning techniques. Carefully designed tasks enable children to think deeply about new learning to make it more memorable. We reviewed to ways of delivering these tasks: generative drawing and generative summarising.
We had a great meeting with school today to discuss our plans for this term and how we can support with PTA funds for things like a music programme and sports provisions for pupils alongside lots of other ideas.
