Spring Term Newsletter #15
9th January 2026
Dear Parents and Carers,
Happy New Year and welcome back to school! I hope that you all enjoyed the festive break spending quality time with your nearest and dearest.
We came back with a bang this week with the exciting Wonderdome landing in the school hall. Each class has spent a session in the dome exploring a range of space themed presentations. The feedback from children, teachers and parents has been really positive and the visit has been an excellent way to enrich our Space themed first week of term. Thank you to the Friends of Lanchester for organising and funding this engaging and motivating learning experience.
Values: Ready has been our value for the first week of term as we build back our routines and expectations. It has been great to visit classes this week and see the children engaged in learning ready for the term ahead. With readiness in mind, please ensure your child arrives on time, in the right uniform (or PE kit) and with a suitable coat for the current cold snap we are experiencing. Next week, we focus on Responsibility and consider the words of Mahatma Gandhi - "Be the change that you want to see in the world."
Lunchtime Logistics: From next Monday, we will be moving to a whole school lunchtime from 12-1pm. Currently, lunchtimes are staggered but there is no longer need for this and it will enable us to enjoy assemblies as a whole school at 1pm. Year groups will still access the hall at separate times to eat.
No Birthday Treats: To ensure a safe, inclusive and healthy environment for all children, we kindly ask that you do not send treats into school to celebrate birthdays. Many of our children have allergies and others have religious practices that restrict certain ingredients. We are also conscious of the pressure to provide treats and the challenges this can present to families. We will continue to recognise and celebrate with your children on their birthday but without the treats and snacks. Thank you for your cooperation, keeping classes safe and inclusive.
The Great January Jolly: Is a trust-wide initiative being hosted at De Havilland School in Hatfield. We know January can be a difficult month and so we are asking for donations to support families in need within our trust community. Families can support with donations or access the items available. More details are available on a separate letter sent to you all via email.
Diary Update: We are currently in the process of updating our online calendar and noticed an omission. We have a further Inset Day on Monday 1st June. This is the first day after the summer half term.
The cold weather continues into the weekend, but Saturday should be bright and sunny - perfect weather for a winter walk in nature. Cassiobury Park is an obvious choice so close to school, but other great options nearby include Chorleywood Common, Ashridge and Wendover Woods. If your child has been inspired by Space Week, the Natural History Museum has an exhibition running where you can touch a piece of Mars!
Best wishes,
Mr. Matt Morey - Headteacher

Children’s attitude to learning has been recognised through the collection of dojo points, which are then totalled as house points across the school. Every child continues to show their commitment to being Ready, Respectful and Resilient, earning points for their house. Each half term the points are reset and a new competition begins. Carver have made an excellent start to the new term opening up a 10 point lead. Congratulations to everyone involved. Every point represents a moment of success this term.
Here’s how the points stand:
1st: Carver with 193 points
2nd: Curie with 183 points
3rd: Alhazen with 177 points
4th: Sharman with 169 points
Let’s keep up the great work and continue to support each other as we aim for the top!
Class News
The children thoroughly enjoyed the wonderdome this week and it was a great way to introduce this half term topic of 'starry night'. This week we have been learning all about the planets in our solar system. The children are able to name all of the planets and even share facts about them. We learned that the planets orbit the sun and how day and night occur. During child initiated learning the children have enjoyed drawing and colouring the planets as well as creating their own.
This week in science, the children explored the importance of air through an exciting, hands-on investigation. Using an air pump, they launched their own foam rockets and observed how air can be used to make objects move. The children also experimented with different-sized bottles to discover how this affected how high the rockets travelled. They made predictions, tested their ideas, and talked about what they noticed, developing their scientific vocabulary and enquiry skills along the way.
It was a fantastic, energetic lesson that brought learning to life and sparked lots of curiosity and excitement!
This week in Year 2/3 began with lots of excitement as it was Space Week and the Wonderdome visited our school. Throughout the week, the children took part in a range of engaging activities linked to the theme of space. In English, the children created information posters, researching and presenting fascinating facts about the Moon. As part of Art and DT, they designed and made their own planets using paper mâché, as well as designing imaginative space suits. The highlight of the week was the Wonderdome experience, which the children thoroughly enjoyed. They were captivated by the visuals and loved learning many interesting facts about space. Overall, it was a fun, memorable, and inspiring week for everyone.
It has been an out-of-this-world week in Year 4! The children had a fantastic experience in the Wonderdome, which they followed up by writing brilliant recounts in English. Our space explorers have also been busy researching and writing expert fact files on the planets, as well as getting creative by recreating Van Gogh’s "Starry Night" using vibrant pastels. To top it off, they have been putting their bodies to the test with "Astronaut Skills" training, focusing on memory, balance, and reaction time games in tight-space challenges.
It has been an "out of this world" week in Year 5 as we launched into our Space Immersion Week. The absolute highlight was our incredible visit to the Wonderdome, where children traveled through the galaxies without leaving the school grounds! Back in the classroom, the theme continued with an art lesson focused on painting planets and moons using a unique salt-texture technique. By sprinkling salt onto liquid glue and then applying watered-down paint, the children watched as the crystals soaked up the pigment to create realistic craters and swirling atmospheric effects, resulting in a "galactic gallery" of stellar artwork.
Year 6 have launched into the new term with an out-of-this-world Space Week. The absolute highlight was a visit to the Space Wonderdome, where the children were immersed in the wonders of the universe—it was a truly memorable experience for everyone.
Back in the classroom, the creativity continued with some stunning artwork. Inspired by artists online, the children experimented with paints and sponges to create galaxy backgrounds, carefully layering their sketches onto canvas for a professional finish. In English, we have been focusing on the lives of famous astronauts, including Tim Peake and Neil Armstrong. The children have shown great focus, answering comprehension questions and deepening their understanding of space exploration history.
At our Inset Day we began our whole staff training on Positive Regard behaviour training which places relationships at the centre of our culture and community. This is the beginning of our journey as we develop our behaviour approach ready for September 26.
At the staff meeting, we reviewed strategies for gaining and maintaining children's attention in class through the use of clear routines, short burst instructions and interactive opportunities. We also reviewed our use of assessment systems in school and considered a safeguarding scenario.
Welcome back to school. We hope you had a lovely break after a busy festive term. We’re really pleased to have raised over £5000 and the chance to try out Elfridges. The children seemed to love it so we’re busy planning for next year!
Wonderdome
It was great to be able to have Wonderdome in this week and for everyone to be able to take part in it. This was funded through our Tesco Stronger Starts grant which we received last year.
LanchestFest 2026
We’re already underway with planning for LanchestFest 2026 and have some great singers already lined up.
We’d love to raise sponsorship to help us cover our costs. If you or anyone know you know has a company that would like to help support us in return for advertising. We’ll be part of Watford Fringe so will also have advertising through their channels as well.
We’re also inviting external stalls back so if you know anyone interested, please get in touch.
