Spring Term Newsletter #19
6th February 2026
Dear Parents and Carers,
It has been a week packed with opportunities and connections: Year 2/3 visited the museum and Roman ruins of Verulamium on Wednesday (bumping into children from Roselands School - another Danes Trust School); some of our Year 6 children have braved all weather to complete their bikeability course, including sessions out on the roads near school; and today, we have all 'dressed like a digit' to enjoy a range of maths enrichment tasks and raise money for the NSPCC. I also met with Sarah King (Primary Director) and the Year 6 team to review the progress and projected outcomes for SATS. It was pleasing to see how far Year 6 have come and the teaching team are doing an incredible job developing the children's skills and knowledge.
Maths Workshop: A huge thank you to the staff team for the preparation and to you as parents for your attendance and engagement with the Maths workshop on Thursday. We were really excited and motivated by the level of engagement from you all - 74 parents attended the workshop with Mr Bristow (slides and example worksheets can be accessed here) to understand more about the way we teach Maths at Lanchester. It was wonderful to see you all engaged in learning with the children in the classrooms and to be able to share some of the concepts behind our provision and how you can support your children. 'Feedback is growth' and we would really appreciate your thoughts on the workshop and how we can develop future events too.
Values: This week we have been working to 'give honest and sincere appreciation' to each other and to show appreciation for the resources we are lucky to have and to use. Celebration Assembly recognised those children who are kind and considerate but generous too in the way they say thank you. As always, I am incredibly proud of all our values champions. Next week, we turn our focus towards empathy and the phrase 'Empathy is the bridge that connects hearts and minds' by Daniel Goleman. This has added gravitas as it links to Children's Mental Health Week taking place next week.
Votes for Schools: We considered 'Should the Winter Olympics use fake snow?' this week. Climate change means many venues are turning to man-made snow to keep events running. Overwhelmingly, the children said no (85%) concerned about the amount of energy and water needed to generate snow. Next week, with Safer Internet Day on Tuesday, we explore the question: 'Would you trust advice from AI chatbots?'
Monopoly: Watford Edition: This week, it was announced that Watford is getting its very own version of Monopoly! Winning Moves, the company making the game, have asked for suggested landmarks to feature in the game. I cannot think of a better landmark than our iconic building. Suggestions can be made to the following email address: watford@winningmoves.co.uk The game will be in shops ready for Christmas.
If you are planning a quiet weekend at home there is plenty of sport to engage and inspire us all: the Winter Olympics officially opens this evening at 7pm and there are already a host of events you can catch up with; the Six Nations begins this weekend for all rugby fans and Watford FC are the early kick off on Saturday afternoon. Whatever you choose to do, have a great weekend!
Best wishes,
Mr. Matt Morey - Headteacher

Class News
This week in Reception we have been innovating our story of The Sleepy Bumblebee. We changed the characters in our class story and the children have enjoyed creating new actions to help them retell the story. The children then had the opportunity to make their own changes to the story by adding in their own characters. In Maths, we have looked at pairs, doubles and odd and even. The children have showcased their learning through various practical activities when we invited parents in for our maths stay and play session.
This week in Year 1, the children explored their sense of smell as part of their learning about the five senses. The children were blindfolded and smelled a range of different foods, using only their noses to guess what each item was. Some smells were easy to recognise such as onions, while others were much trickier! The children enjoyed describing the smells and sharing their ideas, showing great curiosity and enthusiasm throughout the activity. Ask your child which smells they liked best at home.
This week, Year 2/3 travelled back in time with a visit to the Verulamium Museum in St Albans. The children loved taking part in a Roman market session and learning about life in Roman times. Dressing up as Romans was a real highlight and helped bring history to life! They were fascinated by the beautiful mosaics, the hypocaust heating system, and the remains of the Roman wall. It was a fun, hands-on day packed with learning, curiosity, and lots of excitement!
It has been a busy and exciting week for Year 4! In English, the children showed off their creativity by writing innovative setting descriptions, using fantastic vocabulary to build new worlds. In Science, we experimented with how matter changes, learning all about the processes of melting, freezing, evaporation, and condensation.
We also became global explorers in Geography, looking at why we import food from other countries and how it gets to our shops. Finally, the children have been working hard to prepare for our Maths Parent Workshop—they have actually created all the tasks and challenges themselves to test your skills! We are so proud of their hard work and they truly enjoyed sharing their learning with you.
Year 5 had a brilliant NSPCC Number Day! The children tackled Building a Bot challenges, coding tasks, and multiplication Lego with incredible enthusiasm. From cracking Secret Sums and Animal Adding puzzles to crafting Reasoning Stories, their mathematical creativity shone. A highlight was our 'Stay and Play' workshop where their parents could join in the fun.
Year 6 had a fantastic time celebrating NSPCC Number Day. It was wonderful to see the children exploring maths with their families—thank you to everyone who joined us! The excitement continued in the classroom as the class tackled challenging maths investigations, using teamwork to solve complex problems. It was a brilliant day of fundraising and fun with numbers. Well done, Year 6!
We are in the middle of the termly assessment window and teachers are busy marking and analysing assessment scores this week. We are meeting as a team next week to review the best way to use this data to improve outcomes and guide our teaching.
