Spring Term Newsletter #20
13th February 2026
Dear Parents and Carers,
How is it half term already? The time flies when you are having fun and that has absolutely been the case this week. On Monday morning, we had a visit from the fire brigade who met with Reception and Year 1. That afternoon, we sent some children over to St Clement Danes School to watch their student performances and the team from Serge Hill were also in that day working with the Eco Council to plant new hedges and refresh the raised beds. We met the local rabbi who came in to school to talk with Year 2/3 and yesterday Year 5 were in Cassiobury Park to enhance their learning. Lastly, we welcomed the parents of Year 6 into school for their Expo event. It was wonderful to see parents interacting with the children who shared their learning with confidence.
Values: The focus on empathy and belonging as part of Mental Health Week has enriched many lessons and interactions this week. The values champions were recognised in assembly for so many different ways that they support others: some make you laugh and bring happiness; some noticed others and offered a quiet support; some led by example and encouraged others to come with them. We are a lucky school community to have such values occuring constantly thoughout our every day. Collaboration is our value for the first week back and we consider the words of Ken Robinson - 'Most great learning happens in groups. Collaboration is the stuff of growth.'
Votes for Schools: There was another resounding 'no' from the children this week when asked 'Would you trust advice from AI chatbots?' 84% said no compared to the national average of 73%. The children felt that they were not sure where the chatbot got its information from and whether it would have its own bias - some very mature and considered responses in school this week. With AI creeping into so many aspects of daily life, it will be interesting to review this score in a year's time.
Resident Artist: Congratulations to Gavinu who won the Watford Leisure Centre art competition. His prize is a special meet and greet session with Harry Aikines-Aryeetey and he gets to take his whole class with him! This will be part of the leisure centre's open day on Sunday 1st March.
Serge Hill: We are incredibly fortunate to be one of only two schools that benefit from their outreach work. This week Rachel was in school with her team to plant 40 new shrubs to create a natural barrier to the noise and pollution from the main road. Rachel joined us in assembly today to explain the work she is doing and the impact she hopes to have. Serge Hill hosts family days in the school holidays and have availability in the Easter holidays. Click here to find out more and reserve your space.
World Book Day: Mrs Ansell has some new ideas for this year's World Book Day. Keep an eye out for her email and perhaps use the half term to create your 'Book in a Box.'
There is always a wide range of things to do in Watford over the school holidays. A couple to watch out for: author Iona Rangeley is at Watford Central Library (see flyer further down this newsletter); the Mencap Pancake Race through town on Tuesday; and the fun runs in Cassiobury Park at the weekends. I hope you have a relaxing and enjoyable week whatever you choose to do.
Best wishes,
Mr. Matt Morey - Headteacher

Class News
This week in reception the children have been lucky enough to have a visit from the fire brigade along with their peers in Y1. They listened to a talk on how to stay safe in the event of a fire and got an up close look at the contents of a fire engine, which they thoroughly enjoyed. They have also showcased their recall of our class story in which they have had a go at adapting it and adding in their very own characters.
This week for Children’s Mental Health Week, Year 1 explored the theme "My Place." Through our PSHE lessons, we discussed the environments and activities that make us feel calm, relaxed, and happy. The children created wonderful "Islands of Me" maps, featuring everything from dinosaurs and gymnastics to trips to Cassiobury Park. We also took time to celebrate the people who make us feel special—including our families, friends, and teachers. It was a beautiful week of reflection, reminding us all of the importance of finding our own 'place to be.'
This week in Year 2/3, the children have enjoyed a range of exciting learning experiences. In Art, we learned about the significance of urban landscapes through the work of L.S. Lowry. The children then worked in groups to create their own collages using pictures of Watford landmarks. They had a great time designing and making their own little landscapes. We also had a special visitor from the Watford Synagogue, who spoke to us about the importance of Judaism. The children had hands-on experience exploring some of the artefacts used in Jewish worship. They were even given the opportunity to blow the shofar, an ancient musical horn that is used on special occasions.
It has been a fantastic week in Year 4! The children successfully completed their independent setting descriptions, bringing their writing to life through the clever use of personification and a range of powerful verbs and adverbs. In Maths, we have been mastering the perimeter of 2D shapes, learning how to accurately calculate the distance around the edge of various polygons. In DT, the children showcased their creativity by hand-crafting clay Bankura horses, carefully adding intricate details to complete their sculptures.
Year 5 had a fantastic time exploring Cassiobury Park this week, using the natural scenery to inspire their latest Expressionist artwork. The children focused on capturing mood and bold color, resulting in some truly stunning and emotive pieces.
We were incredibly proud of their excellent behaviour; several members of the public even commented on how polite and respectful the group was. It was a wonderful day of creativity and a true credit to Lanchester. Well done, Year 5!
Over the last half term the children have worked incredibly hard on their learning across all subjects. In preparation for the parent expo they created slides, posters and interactive games to showcase their knowledge. They were excited to be the experts of their topic areas and present to all the adults. We were pleased to welcome so many of our parents and carers, seeing them taking part and discovering out about learning in Year 6.
This week we reviewed the use of our assessment and intervention software. We explored the data from the recent assessments and used it to inform the teaching for next half term. Mrs Henney trained four of our team on the Read, Write, Inc approach to phonics giving us more teaching capacity and smaller group sizes, helping to improve our provision.
Thanks to everyone for your support in this half term. Hope you all have a good break and look forward to seeing you for some more fun Spring events next term.
